Re: TIG welding nickel plated steel

Hey Olivero, good to hear from you. You did the repair last time, what was your process and procedure? Is this the same unit needing repair? New cracks or the ones you did before? I'm thinking TIG with 309 or 312 filler You as well, been a while since I was on here. Yes I did, but it was a pain and...

TIG welding nickel plated steel

Hey Guys, Been a while but I got a question I am hoping you can help me with. I have a Cleveland steamer where the boiler holds a maximum of 15 PSI, not very dramatic but the top of it has cracks all over the place. If I had pictures of it, I would show them to you. This is now the 2nd time it's don...

Re: Managing distortion in steel

Both MIG and TIG want to be performed "indoors" so I'm unclear as to why don't want to MIG weld? But, I too would probably TIG it... Your piece will distort, know that going in. Tack every corner of every piece. Then tack again at the center of each piece. Then tack again at the new mid p...

Re: Stainless Steel SMAW Tips

I LOVE vertical work, and always have. Maybe I'm an adrenaline junkie, maybe I just like being comfortable with stuff that scares the crap out of everyone else. The most fun I've had working was at altitude... Steve One day I want to weld something, hanging upside down, and while roped off the side...

Re: Stainless Steel SMAW Tips

Here's a pic of the 120ft shaft. Haven't touched a TIG torch in over a year but I'm good to go with SS FCAW with Tri-Mix. I'm not too concerned about ventilation but will keep that in mind when I pull the trigger for the first weld. (if you have trouble viewing the image, right-click and open in a ...

Thanks to Jody and some of you guys outstanding looking work I've developed a complex. I can't seem to do a job any more without wondering if Jody or some of the great welders I know would approve. I'm not welding skyscrapers or anything like that but sometimes I feel like I have to say "ok, t...

Thank you, My kind of thinking as well.

I hate being at the 80-90% capacity of what I got.

That's probably why the electrical code specifies you don't go above 80% of the load capacity on a circuit.

Equipment Stands

Here's what I got, 2 griddles, each is 800 lbs. Stand is made out of 6 pieces of tube and 2 shelfs. They slide the stem caster into the tube and call it done, each one is probably a 200 lbs capacity, so that totals 1200 lbs of weight. Then you have a curved floor, 2 of them don't touch, now you have...

Re: Ok. So I've got a complex

I didn't mean I'd skip a weld because of being in a hurry. It's mostly when I'm stick welding I rush the weld. At my day job we build bobcat and tractor implements. We get paid production so you guessed it, we try to weld hot and fast. It carries over sometimes. Skipping welds was just an example, ...

Re: Stainless Steel SMAW Tips

Running a compressed gas cylinder or even a hose down in a hole requires even closer monitoring of air quality. I'm not sure what kind of shaft he's going to be in but unless it's a pipe open on both ends with good ventilation I'd be cautious. But even the ss stick has requirements for ventilation ...

I would love to TIG in a hole suspended by a crane, sounds like serious fun. Hexavalent chrome is dangerous in any case, TIG, MIG or stick. You could get the PAPR ( i think is how its spelled) with the new Panoramaxx helmet and THEN you'll be good to go ;) Or the Miller version or 3 M or whatever, m...

Re: AlphaTIG Arc Won't Shut Down

The pedal has a switch built into it which when you push the pedal down, it engages the switch, closes the circuit and the rest of the components do their thing. I have had one of the pieces my pedal hinges on break off before and it would stay slightly down and keep the pedal "down" when ...

I keep my filler clean and like Olivero, once out of the tube/box, never back in. ;) That said, some days you feel and weld like an expert, and other days, things do not want to cooperate. No perfect welder out there, sometimes shit happens and you mess it up but the glorius thing and the reason I love metalworking so much is that almost any screwup can be fixed with a grinder and some welding. Unlike wood here your just kind of screwed when you mess up. Just give it all you got, stud...

3/16" non beveled. Good luck getting through that, would take a serous amount of heat with all the heat transfer to the rest of the aluminum. Aluminum is a great conductor of energy so it takes more heat to get it going as I am sure you know. But it also makes it able to transfer the heat aroun...
