Re: Destroyed Part

I hate it when that happens - one word of advice - stop parting off with the tool facing up - if you only part off with the tool facing down this almost never happens - I used to have similar disasters & an apprehension over parting - then I made a taller tool post to allow upside down mounting ...

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

Yes - watts is giving you the total amount of power carried which equates to necessary cable size due to heat created by the slight resistance of the cable hence ally cable carries less than copper - but there is no 1 answer on cable size without knowing distance & accepted voltage drop so it's ...

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

If using USA standards then yes on short distance depending on allowable line voltage drop you can get away with 2gauge cable - on longer runs no - without knowing the distance or drop % you cannot say 2awg is adequate - once much over 100 feet from the service head then size needs to increase - on ...

Thanks Oscar - must have remembered it wrong - been a while since I was in college - most wiring I do all the loads are on a data plate on the machines so I just need to get correct size cable & breakers.

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

Thanks for the various replies - not really seeing anything that helps with the cable size issue but it's created more comments than I expected - the power company guys showed up Friday in 2 vans - one got out to watch the other guy hit the pole once with a hammer & announce the pole was good ! ...

Re: Cleaning Mill Scale for TIG

A bit more expensive than regular discs ceramic abrasives work really well - they stay sharper longer & do not load up as easily - either fiber backed flat discs or flap discs will work on mill scale - stay with coarse grit size - if you can find & afford them try 3M Cubitron you will not be...

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

@ Arno Thanks for your reply - I agree with you and have previously explained to them about sharing the load as far as practical across the phases - the problem is that they do not want to replace existing cables to 2 out of the 3 buildings as they are already of adequate size & the location wou...

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

Thanks to all that responded - when I've spoken to the power company guys I will post back on their view or if we manage to find the code that covers it here - but just to clarify I'm in the UK so our power is all 240 single phase or 440 volt 3 phase - neutral does carry the full return load on sing...

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

Many thanks for the fast reply - we can easily look up conductor size for current / distance to the spec in this country - my view was that while the size will be the same for single or 3phase if the load will be 3 separate buildings using 1 phase each driving single phase loads - all 3 phases load ...

Hi - trying to help out doing some electrical work on a farm & could use a 2nd opinion - we have a qualified electrician on site but he is only familiar with single phase - due to change of use of some out buildings they need to run a new supply in from the incoming power supply - the power comp...

Re: Porosity/oxidation frustrations

As mentioned welding over previous Mig welds seems to create problems - also the flanges are generally flame cut with little clean up so extra care & cleaning inside & outside of the joint is needed & depending where the weld is - splitting the gas flow on edges & torch access / angl...

I had the 50amp version of the Cebora cutter - I think there were a family of 35 / 50 / 70amp in they're day - mine was probably mid 80's but they did'nt change much for a long time - a friend had the 70 amp - we both sold them & got import models as they never cut the claimed thickness - used a...

Re: Can You Identify This Tool?

They are quite handy at times though you can use odd leg calipers to do the same job mostly - fairly sure mine if I could find it is the very common one from Axminsters.

Re: Stress relief after stick welding

Or like any material that pinches on the cut whether wood or metal simply drive a small wedge / chisel / screwdriver into the end of the cut once in past the blade width - it's a common problem cutting with carbide circular saws ( like the Evolution ) as the blades have very little side clearance.

The only rustoleum product I've found here is a zinc based primer that just looks like a very pale orange version of regular red oxide paint - some folks like it - I've used it in the past but never thought it anything special - it is only a paint - the Aquasteel is quite an aggressive chemical reac...
