Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

- No water cooler required on the Everlast PowerPro 205 - I power it from the standard range or dryer 240v 30A outlets. - The price for my unit was $1500 CAD including shipping and taxes. - Excellent duty cycle of 60% at 200 amps. - It comes with accessories for TIG, Stick and 50A plasma cutting. -...

I was quite surprised how easy copper house wire was to "weld" with.

Nice looking too - would make a good rod for art work I'd bet.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Hey, What caused that? The manifold was 6061-T6, and an unqualified welder attempted to TIG it, using 2% Thoriated, apparently on a transformer machine, too small a diameter, and too much heat. Aluminum should NOT throw sparks as you grind it... The base metal was full of tungsten spray. The easies...

Re: 3rd Hand

I like them :)

When I did mine, I noticed they would still make small black arc strikes on my aluminum. Jody showed the same and used silicon bronze for the ends I believe.

I did not have any so I used house electrical wire and tigged some copper on mine :)

Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

I watched a movie on Netflix last night called http://deathbychina.com/ It was a real eye opener and explains why so many people are out of jobs. Try buying a product today that is not in some way made in China. Put Miller, Thermal Arc and Lincoln on the list, keep HTP on it, ditch Everlast. ...and...

Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

Any particular reason? Remeber not everyone needs a 2+k welder just to do a bit in the shed of a weekend . Mick. That's what used ones are for - my monster was only $250 and is everyday pro quality :) And no, no specific reason against the machines, just the way they have done business and left cus...

Re: Miller Dialarc 250

Dialarc HF it is a water cooled tig machine, with leads for stick welding. It has a switch for high frequency. How high is this frequency. I believe my Diversion is set at 120 HZ It seems about 70% electrode positive. You are looking at the switch for high freq starting (and continuous for aluminum...

Re: What the hell is happening?

Yes, 1/8" is easier to weld than 1/16" with a spool gun. I can do the thinner stuff if I use run-on and run-off tabs. But I super hate it. Much prefer tig (on all aluminum really). Watch the videos, get it in proper spray mode and lots o practice. Don't expect to be good after a one pound ...

Re: Miller Dialarc 250

My Dialarc and Airco are hard wired to the panel. I just shut off the breaker when done for the day. Same for my compressor. Unless you bought the Dialarc HF, there would be no no high frequency. If you did buy the HF model, no, there is no AC balance adjustment. It's 60hz like my Airco. Either way,...

...and just so no one has to ask, YES, I'm biased against Everlast and Longevity.

Re: What the hell is happening?

My MM210 chart says:

DCEP for hard wire on steel and for aluminum
DCEN for self shielded flux-core (most of them)

Edit: don't see a problem with that wire.

Re: Looking to buy a TIG welder, recommendations please

Check my avatar :). I'm a fan of big old ugly tools. That big Airco is actually a Miller 330 abp. I have $250 in it including the foot control. It laughs at 1/4" aluminum - I run that at 230 amps with no problems (other than too much heat in the torch  ) 230 amps is the mid range on it. Bo...

Re: What the hell is happening?

Looks like you are trying to run short circuit mig like you do with steel.

Are you familiar with what aluminum spray transfer looks like?

If not, Jody has a couple good videos on aluminum mig - I would check them before you go farther.

+1 on what Steve said on polarity - check it out.

Re: Figuring out the voltage on Older MIG Welders

When measuring voltage across the posts while welding, your voltmeter is part of a voltage-divider network in parallel with the arc. This makes the voltage reading relative to actual welding current, which can be usefull. Note that welding current (measured voltage) is affected not only by wire spe...

I'm not that experienced and am not very good and listening to the sound and reading the puddle to gauge what volts I'm running so I'm seeing if there is any way to figure out what volts you're on when using MIG welders that have dials with meaningless numbers. No, I don't have the manual for the m...

Re: Changing rod travel angle while doing a fillet weld?

If you have a challenge distinguishing between tensile strength and elasticity, I suggest you don't go bungee jumping. Metallurgy and mechanics are apples and oranges. I can weld chinese rebar with 11018, and weaken the structure for the brittleness of the interface. I can weld 4130 airframes with ...

Re: Changing rod travel angle while doing a fillet weld?

Tensile stength is a trade off. A high tensile weld is somewhat more brittle/less flexible than a lower tensile weld. I built a whole lot of light structure with 6013 (more years ago than I care to think about), using a Lincoln tombstone. These were floating docks on a large, busy lake, and had to ...
