Re: Thin aluminum

Another trick when starting close to the edge is to lay the rod over the joint and let it protrude a few mm outside the edge. Light up at the end of the rod and let it form a ball, move closer to the edge and let it fuse with base metal. You might need to do a few trials first to find how much protr...

Way too young to pass away.

Wondered many times what happened with John. Went off grid both here and on IG winter 2016.

Try a 6W led spot instead. Less IR for the helmet to trig on.

Nice first try though.

Yeah gas buying sucks. It does  Can you rent by the day in Oz? Sometimes better than buying the small bottles if it is on a limited time. Here I think rent is about 30 to 40 % more compared to a contract. The cost of the gas is the same as on contract but better than if you own the bottle.

Re: Grinding tungsten tip from a newbie

Good idea.

I bought small diamond wheels at Harald Nyborg.
Also bought a cordless Dremel type grinder and an attachment to grind saw chains. Turned it into a tungsten grinder.
Clas Ohlson and Jula sell the discs too but I'm not sure if they have any stores in Denmark.

Re: Thin aluminum

Does not matter the way I do, always have some degree of warping. That's the nature of the beast. I guess you already found out, since you seem to be experienced in thin sheet, even a polishing disc can warp a flat sheet. You will find aluminium much easier to get back in shape. Also 5052 is good p...

Re: Thin aluminum

How far you can go without warping depends a lot of how much shape you put into the pieces. Following pics are on a profile I made of 1,5mm aluminium. Those I tracked with 75 to 100 mm spacing and jumped between sections . I haven't ground the welds flush yet but it looks like nearly zero distorsion...

I would now by-pass the solenoid and measure again. If it's ok then you can be sure it's the solenoid valve.

Re: Oxy/Acetylene Rig for All-Around Shop Use?

Thx, I'll be looking for a propane reg then.
I'm out of acetylene now but I don't have a contract on the bottle so they will take it back if I try to change it.
Don't use it often enough to justify the cost so oxygen propane looks like a better option.

I used to moderate another forum and we always urged the users to upload photos to the forum instead of using external hosts. Too often links went dead for various reasons. Of course a database can crash here too, notin is bullet proof.

Except for the regulator, can a regular oxy-acetylene set be used with propane? No need for welding, just heat and bend use.

A few things to check, easy to get wrong when new to tig. Make sure you run DCEN, torch to negative and ground clamp to positive. Check that you have pure argon In the bottle, no CO2 mix. Check for leaks. High pressure should stay high when you shut the tank valve. Low side can be checked in many wa...

You can also use 1070 which is very ductile and give a softer weld than the other you mention. Don't expect to find Tig rods smaller than 1,6 though. https://www.hilco-welding.com/wp-content/uploads/productsheet/english/F-11A.%20HILCO%20AL%2099,7%20(TIG)-E.pdf You shouldnt have too much problems fin...
