Re: Government Contracts?

Does anyone know the NAICS codes for a welding/fabrication shop? I'm still slowly going through this process.

Government Contracts?

It occurred to me that I probably qualify as a service disabled veteran owned small business, so I'd get highest preference bidding on government contracts. I figured out how to browse through the contracts, but can't see the specifics. All I can see is they want X numbers of assemblies or brackets ...

Re: Thin aluminum thread #109983774888

I tried this when I first bought a tig welder just to practice. I was using the "aluminum" from the steel rack at Lowe's or somewhere like that. I think that stuff is for under your house siding around your windows and I have no idea what alloy it is. Some aluminum alloys like to just coll...

I'm not familiar with the test, but I've done plenty of butt welds on thin 6463 aluminum recently. Are you allowed to clamp it to a backing plate? Do you have adjustable frequency?

Re: Feedback, TIG bead on plate aluminum

1/16th is really thin for aluminum. I try to tack with it, but it doesn't help much. 3/32 is probably better for what you are doing. When the bead flattens out to much it is best to stop and let it cool or dunk it. Watch all of the aluminum videos. All of the little things that sound like they are t...

Be sure to use your crappiest collet setup. I've got BBs permanently stuck to my gas lens defuser from the last time I welded galvanized.

Re: Used TIG Welder questions

I looked for used Snycrowaves and Dynasty's last winter. I came to the conclusion that resale prices were too high and I may as well buy a new one with a warranty for not much more. If you want a good deal on used you should probably go to an auction. I haven't seen any great deals on ebay or craigs...

Re: Thorium

I like thoriated better than E3, but they seem to weld close to the same. I finally tried the ceriated that came with the dynasty a few weeks ago and was like "ceriated, where have you been all my life." Anyway ceriated(grey) and lanthanated(blue) are definitely my top two for aluminum or ...

Got CO2 in the mix? Using Chinese ebay filler rod? I would guess that it's got nothing to do with the machine or settings.

Here are the results of the 5554 experiment. Needed to do outside corner joints so this is just a useless practice piece. Tacks didn't crack even while I pounded the 1-2-3 blocks out.

Re: Machine advice

My first tig machine was a diversion 165. DON'T BUY ONE! I would go for the square wave. AC balance adjustment is a must for welding aluminum. They have one week tig courses at the Lincoln headquarters for $690. You can try out all of the machines and see how made in the USA they are. You also get a...

Re: Welding 5052 with 4043 or 5554

I got 10lbs of Alcotech 5554. I haven't even had a tack crack on me. It welds beautifully. No issues other than being raped by Airgas. I may throw a picture up here later. They list it at ~70$ for 10lb online, but when I called the store they said it was 81$. When I went to pick it up they added a $...

Re: Welding 5052 with 4043 or 5554

The elevated temperature eliminates 5356. The options are 4043, which is easy to weld without solidification cracking, but has low strength and toughness. Or 5554 which is better strength and toughness, but much more likely to have solidification cracking. I guess I will probably order the 5554 and ...

Welding 5052 with 4043 or 5554

I'm planning on going into production on some road racing oil pans made from 5052 Al. Temp will be over 150f service. The charts show that I've got two options 4043 and 5554. The 5554 looks to me like the clear winner according to the charts, so I don't know why it's so hard to find. About the only ...

Question about CK20fx

Are CK torches meant to be used without back cap o-rings? I bought a CK20 flex torch only for my dynasty and it keeps shredding the o-rings on my back cap. When I'm unthreading my back cap it gets tight from the o-ring rolling out of it's groove, and sometimes the o-ring actually stays stuck in the ...

These c-channel pieces get cut down to the top of the 1/2 inch bar stock, so there is a j-bevel at the top of these welds. I think maybe I need to open it up more to get deeper in there. This welded in piece gets drilled and bolted through. I just wanted to throw in the tig finger shot. Jodi should ...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

This will be mostly hidden. I would like to know if it's possible to melt through this notch from the front. The only way I know of making it look good is to get less penetration and don't want that since this joint should not even be here. If I weld on this side I would need to sand it off. I did a...

20160522_133417.jpg We are doing a short run of a new all aluminum schmitt32.com line drilling system. This extrusion was not meant to be used for this part but the steel yard sold us 6063 even though they said they only sell 6061. This is 2.3mm 6463 which seems to machine and weld fine. Butt weld ...
