Re: MIG vs TIG
Typically I use 70S-6 for tig filler which is the same as the mig wire so it should yield the same tensile strength. I'm not an expert but would heat input have any impact on this as well?

we have 17 air cooled torches at my high school and have mostly water cooled 20 torches. I didn't know what was going on. It just felt so weird having the torch be so big going back to the 17.

Re: Stainless steel mig
Is that because of your stick out? If so, do you run with your hand steadying the torch? or the shroud resting on the job? It is probably from a very small change in stick out. I was talking to one of my instructors at tech school and he said it is known to switch really quick with the gas. I'm ste...

Stainless steel mig
Started work this past Tuesday at the local stainless steel bulk tank manufacturer and I'm loving it. Running 316 wire .035" with 98/2 blend for all the mig work and holy cow is it sensitive. I blink wrong and it turns from short arc to spray. Of course machines are cranked to 26-27 volts with ...

Re: 6011 Whip and Pause
I like to whip everything 6010/6011 just because when I don't I can't get it consistent or to lay in the joint very well. It doesn't look aesthetically pleasing either to me so I whip everything.

Welcome aboard mate! I too had most of beginnings in welding on my uncles farm where I have spent my Summer's for the past few years. Biggest thing about welding on farms:use the safety equipment. I know most guys barely put a helmet on to weld and then go at it. Don't do that.

...and mind your interpass temps! Capping straightaway on hot fill passes is a significant cause of cap undercut. Biggest thing for me when I did it. I didn't get undercut because I watched but I got like a 1/4" reinforcement. Now I don't light up until it's under like 250 and I use a infrared...

Velcro did not hold up very long with mine once I really started using it every day. Part of that I'm sure was drastic temperature changes from a lot of cold outside to all of a sudden welding in the warm shop.

As I've been told, the same metal rods go into each electrode and the flux coating is what changes the properties if the weld. Is this also true?

Re: All types of Welding Safety - Question
I've made enough safety errors in my few years to always make sure I'm covered. I wear all leather jacket whenever I'm doing most welding besides tig that is out of position. If I'm doing a whole lot of light mig or bench work than a light cotton jacket. Safety glasses obviously, and as I see it nev...

Re: Pulse vs. Pedal
Pulse has it's place especially with thin materials and stainless. When I'm doing actually tig for legitimate practice and projects, I use the pedal and don't pump it. I can't keep it consistent enough and if you watch one of Jodys videos on it, "romping" the pedal actually increases your ...

Re: What's the biggest project you've worked on?
In the early 1970's I worked on a concrete silo building crew. For winter layoff my boss got me a job with a friend of his who owned a welding and fab shop to keep me over for spring when construction started up again. As luck would have it he landed a contract to place and weld all the deck beams ...

Re: Mig flux core 5/16 inch thick metal
Based on what you said, I assume you have a smaller mig machine and will use self shielded flux core. If not, then whatever, but some self shielded wires are not rated for multi pass welds. Make sure you read about the wire you have.

Re: 7018 3G with Backing strip
My biggest struggle with 3g was the cap pass. I figured out to not touch it until the area of the weld joint wasn't over 250 degrees. I used an infrared thermometer. I played with temperatures and thats what worked best. Just give them toes some love if you are getting undercut. Stringers or weave?

Why do some CWIs just not care? A couple of my instructors were talking about one inspector that recently died named John. If you're going to start with one, choose stick. Gives you a better feel of a puddle with less variables to control. Pick an amperage and burn. It'll help you be able to posistion yourself better as well in my experience.
