Re: Help welding Cast

Nail, what's up with all the ". . . ." posts? I have no idea. I tried to upload a comment and it was tripled and wouldn't let me delete it. Internet is goofy the last couple days. Ya know, I always say the problem is most likely between the keyboard and the chair.... I'll agree with you t...

Re: 4043 vs. 4943

I agree completely. All I was suggesting was that we choose our jokes carefully. It's an area where I catch myself being competitive, and I have to police myself carefully to not put up something that could sound racist or otherwise potentially offensive to any of our members. Sometimes, alcohol ha...

Re: Affordable welder worth it?

Sooooo...I almost pulled the trigger on Eastwoods 250 amp tig welder but I rarely tig anything that thick to use that many amps. I would trust Eastwood. Eastwood doesn't sell a 250A "dedicated" tig welder under their brand name. Might wanna go easy on the booze  They have the multi-p...

Re: 4043 vs. 4943

We probably should be a little more restrained on these jokes. As fun as they are, we have new members every day, and I'd hate for us to be misunderstood before they get to know us. Steve So after their first hijacked thread they should know us pretty well, huh? :D (Exnailpounder and Farm boy) :o Y...

Re: Affordable welder worth it?

I've been looking around for multiprocess machines and found out about these really cheap Eastwoods that come with about everything for under $650 brand new. Does anyone have any experience with them? They are so cheap and small that I feel like they'd be worth it to have around. http://www.eastwoo...

Hard to tell but that looks more like an air pocket in the casting rather than a missing piece.

Re: Help a dumb Noob! Did I burn my eyes?

I'm enjoying a cold barley-pop as I type this. Rocketsurgeon's experience with NASA is mostly in friction-stir welding. He's as green as the next guy in the processes we use, though he has some solid education behind him. It'd suck to pick up a claw hammer, when you're used to a 3# cross-peen f#@&a...

SPF does nothing for MIG spatter... Steve    Is that the voice of experience :o I can attest to it  And also I have used numerous welding jackets that a good bit of spatter has gone through. Burns that smelled like mig welding for probably eight hours. That took me awhile to fig...

Re: Best way to weld SS to prevent crevice corrosion??

I would use 316 throughout, and an over-alloyed (fully austinitic) filler. Eliminating ferrite in the weld will go a long way to stopping crevice corrosion. Here's a quote from a discussion I had recently with a welding engineer, "Examples of filler metals which solidify austenitically are AXT...

The rudder is a 1974 on a 1974 boat. I have owned the boat for 20 years. As far as I know, the rudder was not rebuilt before I owned it, but I cant be sure. There are many other boats of the same model and year and some owners have rebuilt theirs. Many just scrape out the old foam and dont really e...
