Re: Miller XMT 350 HELP-3 while welding

Me too, maybe I need open up the case and blow the dust out? Definitely do that. If there's dust and debris caked on the components then it can't shed the heat and will thermally overload much sooner than expected. Also check that the intake and exhaust vents are not obstructed (eg. dirty filter if...

Re: new welder, why does my torch keep welding when I let o

It may default to 4T for the button control when set to 'panel'. 4T style would work like this: - Bring the torch to the workpiece - Click the button once and release it, arc initiates and will stay lit - Get your weld going... - Once you want to stop, click the button again, arc will taper off and ...

Re: 3 phase cable sizing

Thanks to all that responded - but this load is 3 independent single phase supplies as the power company will not upgrade the incoming supply above 100 amp - it is rural & would involve re stringing a long distance of overhead cables to the transformer assuming this has any capacity left as it ...

Ah.. The fun of 3-phase 8-) Keep in mind that the neutral in this setup is not always even used. You'll likely have a Three Phase Four Wire Wye setup with 3 phases and a neutral in a connection using a 'star' setup. Same. 5356 filler should not be used in aplications with in=service temperatures above 150F (65C)

Yup.. The Lincoln high-freq box also has a 'water inlet' label on it. So it looks like a watercooled torch.

Re: TIG Welding 316 Stainless Steel

Yup.. LIke mentioned above you need to use at least 316 filler and usually pickle/passivate afterwards to get a 'pure' stainless surface again that can form it's protective oxide layer. But the issue with welding stainless is also in how hot you get the area around the weld. If you overheat the base...

Trying to grind it like a crayon. I noticed the piece getting too hot and weld starting to sink, even on a longer piece today I had to limit weld lengths, space them apart and allow cooling. Can see the advantage of a foot pedal, will purchase one in a few weeks when money permits. No pedal on alu,...

Re: Aluminum inside corners giving me soooo much grief.

Alu inside corners are often tricky for many people. Here Jody's mantra of 'keep a tight arc' and giving it enough amps really helps to get the job done. Bury that tungsten deep in the corner and hit that pedal. Difficulty here lies mostly in getting going smoothly. The initial puddle forming takes ...

Re: Overheating 6061 while tigging?

My main concern is if its possible or likely i’ll see a failure from overheating the part. For alloyed alu types like 6061 the most 'damage' you do by heating it a lot is that it can lose some of it's strength that was incorporated in the (usualy) T6 hardening. Of course the weld itself and HAZ are...

Really interesting. The discuss deposition rate, wire lost due to fume, cost per llbs etc etc. Yup.. LIke Jody mentioned in his video's before you see that flux-core wire, because it's basically a hollow metal tube, ends up depositing less metal in the weld for a certain wire feed rate so you need ...

Re: Stainless steel color and quality

This question depends a lot on the type of stainless being welded. An austenitic stainless like 304/316 won't be affected much by the heat of the base metal and as long as you keep it covered in gas then the corrosion resistance should not be affected and neither will the grain structure. This type ...

Re: Cast iron engine block repair

Stitching might be an option, but here I think it's too close to the edge and the load from the fastener wanting to spread the crack open as the head is torqued down will overwhelm it. I think the only way to possibly repair it is to grind a V groove all the way into the block until the crack is gon...

Re: Strike arc...sticks EVERY time

I've done some plastic welding, it rarely works or I'm just bad at it. Plastic welding effectiveness is highly dependent on the base material though. Some plastics work a lot better when (re)heating and melting than others. All of them suffer from more or less work-hardening in the base material th...

sugaring can lower the strength of the weld. As well as ruining the corrosion resistance of stainless as it boils out all the chromium and nickel on the back of the weld. Very bad on engine exhausts where the rust/corrosion problem always starts from the inside with the acids in the gasses and the ...

Re: Restoration question.

We have one very old riveted, I am guessing iron, bridge that doesn't seem to rust out like I would expect regular steel to. Maybe someone can explain why? If it's old-skool (hot-)riveted then the bridge is likely either made from a ductile cast-iron or wrought-iron. Both are much slower corroding ...
