Re: Bending 4130 sheet making brackets and fittings

Thanks for the reply....but there are just some things that you can't help but worry about. This would have driven me not to fly this plane or let anyone else. Not to step on anyone's knowledge base.....but I am a worry wart. So I dug deeper into metal fabricating for aviation. These brackets attach...

Bending 4130 sheet making brackets and fittings

I have learned something a little too late. I have read that bending molly sheet it likes to be bent against the grain of how it was rolled with a large radius. So....I have a set of 4 very important fittings that are bent with the grain / along the grain. They have also been welded at this bend in ...

Re: Metallurgical question

Thanks for the info...been chasing info all day. And tested some same materials...I learned things today. Dug my torch and IR temp gun out and wanted to see what could be found with what I have on hand....no hardness testing. I set a piece of the same tubing on the table and heated it as if I were t...

Metallurgical question

OK here goes. The material in question is 6061 T-6 aluminum tubing. It has had a propane torch flame applied to the inside end of it to soften some industrial grade epoxy structure adhesive. The adhesive has a glass transition temperature of 68 deg C. or about 155 deg F. This is the point that the a...

OK That's a ballbuster. I guess I have been watching his vids a long time.....I am still learning from them to this day. He is a great guy for showing how things really work and why. That's important to me. Like I have said before...if he taught a class...I'd be waiting for the door to be unlocked e...

Noise coming from tubing ????

I had Tig'd up a few things the other day and could hear a " tink - tink - tink sound coming from a cluster weld. Is this a possible sound from hot cracking? Or is it just the heat spreading and cooling? It was at the end of a 3 tube cluster on the last weld in a jig. It did not show any visibl...

Here is a pic of the rear wing attach tube that was out of square and too close to the front tube as far as being correct for wing spar placement. It has bolt on wing spars....the bolt centerlines had to be as close to the lift strut bolt center line as humanly possible. I welded the tube as an asse...

Job opportunity for me....hex chrome worries

I have the chance at a position with a local company to weld stainless. Small tube fittings and railing. I am a bit reserved about taking it in fear of all I have read on hexavalent chromium. There are no fume extraction equipment. Is this a real problem? It seems OSHA takes it for a real problem. I...

I don't know much about welding....but my learning curve on .035" wall tube was lot different that what I thought. If it were me doing the cage...I would set the amps to 130 or so. Long needle pointed tungsten with a gas lens and 20 cfh. Puddle up on the thicker wall tube to start. Make a coupl...

I recently tried some electrodes from USA Weld and it may sound weird but the arc sounded more crisp on starting and did make a tighter puddle. I thought I was just crazy not welding all that long now. So I changed back to the ones that came with the blue machine....and it was sluggish to puddle and...

CL is a crapshoot lately for sure. I bought a new commercial mower last fall and waited until recently to sell the old horse. Thought it would be a better sell on CL. Boy what a run around with the no shows and just plain tire kickin' jacklegs. Finally got one guy that showed up with cash, truck ,tr...

Lit up on some stainless at the shop today. An ET display standoff and another tube-to-plate mount. I really admire Zank's abilities.....to the point I want to weld like that. Looks like I have a lot of face time to go.

Finally done !!!! Everyone should make one engine mount that welds. Man did I learn a ton. Not the prettiest welds I can do. A lot different than just running beads on a tube for sure. A retired welding instructor told me that he would fly behind it no worries. A relief for me to have it inspected t...

That's cool...my neighbor is nearing completion of his 701 set up as yours....C-85 with 0-200 crank in a -3 case. He is using the C-85 cam and lifters for more low end torque...they are cast camshafts - the O-200 cam is billet steel...so don't intermix cam followers!

Re: Welding a GOAT

From Alcoa documents.....Welding 6061-T6-Typically, after welding, the properties near the weld are those of 6061-O, a loss of strength of around 80%. The material can be re-heat-treated to restore -T4 or -T6 temper for the whole piece. After welding, the material can naturally age and restore some ...

I wish I had other options...I only have the TIG machine. It would be easier MIG....but I think after getting a tack I can start on that and come around the tube on that thick washer. You think that is a good starting point to come away from there? After watching Jody's video on a similar piece he d...

OK here is one of the not so mean junctions...but was still a big pain in the a$$ to get tacked without blowing out the tube. Still learning but this is a hard time for sure. I have one at the 20 degree angle...the last tube. I may try some .045" filler and let the puddle get wide as it wants a...

Those hard to get to places.....

OK Saturday I cleaned all my parts for my engine mount. Put everything up in the jig again and double checked everything. I'll get it tacked up. Yeah -right. There went all my practice out the window. I did manage to get 3 of the 4 main tubes tacked up. I blew out the first tube at the deep junction...

Anyone ever thought of getting some stuff at the Lowes store and making a small unit for shop table use on the cheap? I was thinking along the lines of a small fan in the wall for a louvered vent outlet and dryer duct mated to it down to the weld area. Most things I weld are small and will be sit do...

Re: Can I tack this up and then finish out of the jig?

OK then...it will stay in there until it's done. The engine mount locations are held in place by a 1/4" T-6 plate. The base is held in position by 1/4" steel plate. The separation between the 2 plates is a couple of small "I" beams and everything bolted up tight. It won't move......
