Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Alternately, I use a photo hosting site. The one with the least amount of advertising wins for the moment. I used to use photobucket, until it got so laden with advertisement that it would freeze my somewhat antiquated desktop pc. So, now I use imgur.com, which also has some relatively simple editin...

Re: bending aluminum for a fuel cell?

I've welded quite a few tanks in my time and repaired my share of cracked welds on tanks as well. The problem with most failed welds is that many people, in spite of their welding skills, do not know how to set up a proper open corner and maintain the same reveal throughout as it is being welded. Yo...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

We're still banging them out. Last night I treated myself to a shave, as it occurred to me that I had not seen my own face since last weekend. It's nice to come to this thread and see others getting to weld and nice work to all who keep on. Here's the gist of what we are into currently. You would th...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Thanks y'all.

Anybody in the Tampa/Brandon area that can run a halfway decent aluminum TIG, that can move their feet, and not afraid of learning a new way to weld, we may have an opening soon if anyone's interested.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I envy those who get to measure their welding process and turn out all of those textbook quality welds. We rarely get that opportunity, seeing as we are now essentially competing with 3rd world standards, or what the yuppie market will allow. Either way, all these parts get a rather heavy powder coa...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

My son and I built 20 of these today. All with the finger switch method at 250 amps. Each frame also has 2 solid break away fittings. On each cope, I start as far down as I can reach and pull the torch uphill without letting off the switch. The rod dips create the fish scales. Once I start coming up...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

You're actually doing really good. Only people who are going to show better examples are those who weld the same types of joints every day and have the type of materials and fittings around that afford them that much practice. Try scribing some soap stone lines as guides if you need just one to come...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I've been busy the last 2 weeks and hadn't got a chance to try this again until yesterday. This was my 4th try. Looks a little better than the 3 that I did 2 weeks ago. What do I need to work on? I would say you have the torch part down. What that looks like to me is more about your positioning and...

Re: How do you tig weld in a tight spot?

In my experience with cast aluminum, or any trapped corner for that matter, the shielding gas does not want to flow into a dead end like that so, I drill it through if I can, and create a chimney path, either through, or up and out, with a series of side by drill holes or a thru-groove. Lowering the...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Thanks everyone. That's the same switch I use, Rick, and they last a very long time under what I consider severe duty. I have had the same switch on mine for 12 years. We have had so many people come thru our shop trying to use the pedal and they find out it is not practical for all of the freehand ...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Nice repair. I think I would rather repair things than scratch build large projects. It's that whole ever looming budget thing that just makes it stressful sometimes. Especially since industry has been taken over by the service sector and it's way too many forks in the pie. It really hadn't occurred...

Get some scrap and practice pads of beads until you see them in your sleep. Then laps, then tees, and then on to open roots.

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Thanks, people. Yes, I have been up against JB weld. Is why I cringe when I see it mentioned as a fix for anything. It's become increasingly popular since the internet came along. I have had to weld some pretty scuzzy cast aluminum over the years. These are pretty ok usually, as long as you don't da...

Re: Need alternative to Tig foot pedal...help!

You don't need variable control to weld aluminum. You could use a momentary switch and operate it with anything you can move. You could make a switch out of a wooden clothes pin if you had to. Look up manual pulse welding. The momentary pulsing would allow you to stop and start as much as you needed...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

I have been building a LOT these last many months by now, which is why I haven't been around much. So, when something simple comes along, it amuses me just to not have the every day pressure of production quotas. This is a busted skeg on a relatively new, Yamaha outboard motor. It's foil shaped. htt...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

There isn't a "what I welded the other day" thread, so figured I would post this here. Open corners on 1/4" flat stock. 226" worth. 220 Amps, 1/8" pure tungsten, 1/8" 5356 filler. 4 hours total, and that includes pressing the 'cupped', imported plate flat across it's fa...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

motor mount for my old willys jeep. Figured I'd get some TIG practice in. Not as even looking as I'd like it to be in some areas, and I definitely need to work on making the puddle consistent when I resume an existing weld run. That's more than adequate for what it is. If you did it too much better...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

Sort of wish I still had the focus that I had 20 years ago where I used to scrutinize every portion of the weld and make them perfect. I forget to do it these days as things become more of a general habit than treating my welds individually. While the weld in the bottom photo is pretty nice, I see w...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)

A little bit of sister'n. Instead of reinventing the wheel, yet again, I just slobbed on a piece of 1/4" x 2" flat bar. This 1" x 2" box tubing is only 1/8" wall, so it can't really be relied on for anything structural by my experience. It can hold the floor up, but that's a...
