Thanks Kym. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to sell the welder and quit. It seems like thicker material welds a bit better. This is .078 5052 with 5356 filler. The mounting tabs are thicker yet. John.

I have been watching the recent tig videos with Roy and Jody tig welding some aluminum boxes and I think it is finally paying off. A picture of more progress on the fuel cell.

Here is a picture of some recent lap joint welds. I bent two u's out of .090 5052 for the fuel cell. Should work out nice. Thanks for all the tips stay tuned. John

Type in fuel cell at Jegs or Summit Racing and you'll come up with both aluminum and steel cans with bladders. Rci makes both but still calls them fuel cells. Most of my drag racing buddies all have aluminum boxes with fuel in them. I guess there is a lot of people misusing the term.

Is it structurally okay to just weld all six pieces if you don't mind the extra labor time? Is the rumor true about welds crack easier?

Is it okay to just weld all six pieces to form a box?

Are people bending so they don't have to weld as much or is there another reason as well such as welds cracking easier possibly?

That would be great.
