If it’s stored in my shop for more than 2 days, then somebody died and either way it’s mine now.

The only difference between 6010 and 6020 is the flux, 6020 is for flat work only.

Or you hang down on the inside and weld it from in there.

If it’s within arms length from where you can get your head. Then you might need to tape up some 12” mirror tiles, sold at most Home Depot stores. Then you need to be able to get your head and arms in position at the same time. If you can get good visibility then you can tig it with a mini rig. Need...

Re: Cost of operating a welder

Worked at a place (big fab shop) that actually did a study. They put an amp clamp timer on the welder to check actual arc time. Best guy hit about 70%. But he knew the timer was there and had set up his work station for two days before to maximize his arc time. Spent two days at 10% to hit one high ...

Re: Support Frame/Beams for garage rack/shevles

I recently bought some pallet racking for our shop at work. I found a place that deals in used stuff. Bought 2 side rails for standard teardrop beams. 12’ tall. For 60$ us each. Then got 6 12’ cross beams, light duty rated at 2100 lbs per shelf. Each cross beam was 35$ us. Check around at you storag...

For people looking for someone to repair there blades, I would ask local machine shops. They often know who does good carbide repair work.

Check out engineering tool box. Or just google weld deposition rates. There will be some anecdotal posts but there will also be some doctoral level papers.

Re: Travel Speed for E 7018 electrode

I think the only true way to compare the process is deposition rates. It accounts for the bead size by measuring only the amount of deposited metal.

They are both softer than concrete. Plus there more likely to break when you drop or move something. Crete will just chip or scrape. They’re both more susceptible to oil saturation than concrete as well. Just talk to a countertop stone guy. Engineered quarts might be harder and more durable.

Re: Cracks in AL fusion every time

If I do 2 passes with lots of filler the crack should go away? The cracks probably won't show up but that doesn't mean you'll have sufficient penetration. People can argue theory all they want, but the only way you'll know is to make a test weld with similarly sized materials, then cut and etch to ...

Vinegar is an acid and it will work but you need to expose the system for much longer because it it weak. https://clrbrands.com/Products/CLR-Household/CLR-Calcium-Lime-and-Rust-Remover Using something like this will speed up the process. Problem with most instantaneous water heaters is small passages don’t work well with bad water. The minerals build up so fast The only way to stay ahead is flush it with a descaling agent every few weeks. The cost of the chemical averages out to the cost of replacing the units. So even then it’s exp...

Re: 3/8 V-Grooved backed plate 3G test 7018

3/32 is much easier to control because your putting down metal at lower heat and a slower rate. If you see something in the puddle you don’t like you might have time to correct, but with 1/8 you don’t have much wiggle room. Especially on a grove joint that small. If I am unsure of a machines accurac...

I would be anywhere from 90 to 120 amps. Totally depends on fit up and test position and accuracy of the weld machine.. IE 5G would be 90 ish. Inside finish needs to be flush or above. How much above is determined by the WPS. Last one I took was up to 1/16 over fill on the inside. But no unbroken ed...

Re: Unwelding soldered brass from copper comments appreciate

It’s old enough I doubt it’s silver solder. Propane should be enough. MAPP is definitely enough. When unsoldering old stuff you want to go with less heat, warm it all up slowly so that all the solder gets soft at the same time. I would ask before you open it, what’s the real problem. If the elements...

Re: 3/8 V-Grooved backed plate 3G test 7018

I am not trying to be disparaging. From the look of your pictures you need to grind down your first pass a lot more before trying to run over it with the next pass. If there is any sign of slag you need to grind it all out before you weld over it. V groove joints make it very important because the s...

Hardest part about 7018 vertical up is getting used to seeing the slag drip off and fall away but not reacting, but learning that the metal is still getting deposited.
