Re: JD Brewer 60 ft metal rack build

Richard, If you noticed, the video only shows 40' of the 60' build. I think the short section is shown with an extension (10''?) not shown in the video, at the far left of the "assembled outside" image. There also seems to be a bolt-up on the last 10' section on the right. Speculating, for...

Re: When should I move to a better shop?

All valid points. The job search is a constant. A year on a first job looks good on a resume'. That said, I made $11/hr in production in 1989/90. How much more can you expect to learn where you're at? That was always the line I would draw. When I had learned all a job was going to teach me, I would ...

Yep, he checked in on FB this morning. He'll get wet, and might have to duck tornados, but he's much safer there.

Re: Affected by Irma?

My wife is sheltering with her family in Titusville, in an up-to-code concrete-block house. God knows how, but they purchased a generator two days ago to replace the smoked one I can't get there to fix. With the westerly track, I think they'll be fine. I'm concerned for a friend in Tampa, though. St...

Welcome! Yep, it's Jody. Joey is one of his sons, the webmaster for this forum, the WTT website, and the weldmonger store. The podcast is a wealth of information, as well. It's on many of the popular sources, like iTunes and iHeart radio, or you can find it here: http://www.wttpodcast.libsyn.com Steve

Welcome! Have you checked gas flow through the hose between the regulator/flow-meter and the solenoid? An old hose can collapse internally and block flow before gas reaches the solenoid. I'm assuming you mean you get little flow directly from the solenoid output. If that's not what you meant, check ...

In this system, 10% overpressure is all that's required, as the test is pneumatic and the energies stored are immense. I don't know if that was initially done or not. The system was in service for at least 3 years without failure, but thermal cycling from ambient to -423F and back was going to produ...

I can't resist posting here. We've gotten one excellent hire directly from this group, and he brought another excellent hire from the school he took additional training in. I've had a couple other good candidates from here, as well, but it wasn't a fit for them.

Scary stuff. We reworked about 250 welds like that in sch. 160 stainless, where the builder just butted and crowned them just like your macros. This was hydrogen gas service with a MAWP of 8800 psi  Crazy thing is, the client swore it was a 10% x-ray job, but couldn't find the documentation. ...

I use alumabrite aluminum cleaner. Muriatic acid from the pool supply or masonry section of your box store. Certain toilet bowl cleaners are acid-containing and will work in a pinch. These all require a soak time... They're not as fast as Naval jelly on carbon steel.

I like the idea, as well. Kind of a tribute topic. I also agree it should be a locked topic, without comment. It's not the kind of thing that should be able to be jacked, nor where anyone not in the know can criticize.

I'll run it by the admins.

Re: Compressed gas equipment

Here in the states, the CGA580 is common to argon, argon blends, helium, helium blends, and nitrogen. One flowmeter will handle them all.

One issue, is the density difference with helium and helium blends. On a typical argon flowmeter, 10 CFH of helium will barely move the ball.

You can also rapidly rust bare metal from cleaning by hitting it with a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and household bleach. Just keep the surface wet until you get the patina you're after, the lightly rinse it with water.
