Re: foot pedal
We pretty much only use tig torch switchs here in Australia. I'm sure people use foot pedals but not too common

Hi there,
I'm guessing you have your torch hooked up to the positive side of circuit. For tig, you need electrode negative.

Re: Do Fancy Welders Make Your Work Better?
In my opinion, in Australia at least, welding equipment can be cataloged according to price. Too cheap (avoid) cheaper (OK for home/light use) medium (should be able to be used regularly without any issues, a good investment) high (should be able depended on to perform most tasks well enough for bus...

Re: Buried pipe for welding practice stand
We don't say ground in Australia. We say earth. But the proper term is work return lead. Make sure you are not confusing the ground or earth or work return lead and the ground /earth of the electrical circuit. BTW if it is a problem, how do people make cattle yards and post fencing that are in the g...

All shields were not created equal. Speedglas is the absolute best. Consider that that was all they did before 3m bought them. As with Lincoln engine drives and miller tigs, the central product is usually the best

Re: Buried pipe for welding practice stand
Weld a bolt to your pipe. And bolt your earth lead to it. Wear boots and make sure the ground is dry and there will be no problem mate. Think of all the welding that gets done outside. If you are particularly worried make up a wooden deck thing to stand on. It won't really matter a few sparks fall o...

Re: Got flashed tonight
The sun doesn't usually cause helmets to darken. Do some proper welds and see how it works. Don't worry about the flash, it's just visible light. Harmful rays can't go through the plastic. Obviously don't keep using it if it flashes again though

Re: Got flashed tonight
Auto helmets sometimes don't like tig. The shadows thrown out play curry with the sensors. Speedglas used to have a hidden arc mode, but now it's just better sensitivity.

Re: Trouble starting 6011 "First Strike"
In my humble opinion, I think you have a large number of things working against you. Most mere mortals can't stick weld something that thin. Also, for some reason, previously painted stuff, possibly powder coated stuff is really difficult to weld. Plus the 6011 rods have a forceful arc that is desig...

Re: What rods for structural welding beams with epoxy paint?
If you have any anything to do with the painting, have the people mask off the are to be welded. It's not that hard. The thing to remember about weld through primers are that they are designed to work at a very specific thickness. **microns of thickness. If it's anything thicker than the stated desi...

Re: Glare/Reflection entering over/under welding hood
I've done things like this. You can buy back of hood covers for most well known brands, but make sure it covers the whole of the back of the shield, gaps and all, rather than just the back of your head. I find it very bad when you are welding in an enclosed space where the light can't escape

Who knows about Chromolly? 4130
We use heavy wall Chromolly tube at work. 6.4 (1/4) wall thickness. We weld it with pulse mig and 80s8d2 wire. With the mig we use a pre heat of 80°c minimum. My question is in regards to tig welding of same material. We use the tig for blending /fixing undercut and the like. We are not required to ...
