Welcome to the forum, Marc! Cool machine, does she power up? If it has a fan, you may want to make sure it's spinning before using the welder. The jacks you need look similar to the jacks for a Miller Thunderbolt welder. (Picture here: http://www.airgas.com/p/MIL039901?agcert=Certona:Airgas+Recommen...

Any strength added, or value of any type, if you were to drill 1/2" holes in the outer sleeve, and plug weld to the inner sleeve?

In the US, companies are required to provide a Materials Safety Data Sheet, MSDS, for the products they sell. This is a link to the tungsten MSDS from a prominent provider called Diamond Ground: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.diamondground.com/DGP-MSDS.p...

Re: New welder! Eager to learn!
I am seeking to learn how to TIG weld as a hobby. I am looking forward to learning all I can about TIG welding! Welcome to the forum! CJ737 has given good info and advice: stick welding is a good process to learn welding, and you can even convert a DC stick welder into a TIG welder if you want. Hav...

I've read all the information from the devices manufacturer. It all sounds as if it is related to stick welding. Doctors and technicians are all specialists in their fields and don't know anything about electric welding processes. Their easy advice is don't do it. {snip} If there are any ICD carryi...

The mantra for stick welding is, "Use enough amps so the electrode doesn't stick when you hold a tight arc. Then, hold a tight arc." What kind of projects are you working on/have in mind?

Re: Old and nasty 6011's
Some people here report "rejuvinating" 6010 and 6011 by soaking them in the sink briefly. Is there a "best practice" way to do this? Seems like wetting the rods without saturating would be the way to go. I tried aome old 6011s a while back, and they wouldn't burn as they usually...

Re: Paying Taxes. Getting paid under the table.
Thinking on it a bit longer, the easiest and cleanest way out may be to get a new job where they do take proper deductions. If current boss says Why are you leaving? you can tell him "because i want to go clean and it'll cause grief for you". If the job interviewer asks Why do you want to ...

Re: Paying Taxes. Getting paid under the table.
To make this right, sooner or later somebody somewhere will pay employment taxes on your wages. Setting aside the morality arguments of not paying taxes, the biggest issue for you may be qualifying for social security when you retire or get too sick to work or injured (in a work related accident?). ...

What Pete says- you could get into a community college entry level course on stick welding and get the fundamentals: shop safety, PPE, electricity, reading the puddle. Then take it from there, and maybe the supervised practice will be just what you need.

Can't be the first time anyone's ever pondered this. Can the nipple braze in?
Why not purge? Calculate the volume of the keg, add a Y connection to the flowmeter, run argon until the air is displaced, then weld?

Welcome, Terry! Which TIG machine... a lot depends on what you plan to do with it. Aluminum will require an AC machine, for instance. Your budget will also drive the answer. This is not to teach professional welders, but just to get people interested in learning the absolute basics. MIG has the shallowest learning curve and students can get good results quickly, which can make them more likely to pursue welding more seriously. Maybe part of the course could include a c...
