Nice profile, even deposition, good wetting at the toes.

Thats a good weld.

Re: Amps showing up on display while welding

Well so the arc force regulation , when there is one, , is possibly the "fine setting" ? WIth zero arc force I noticed a very buttery arc, not so unpleasant but I did put arc force back trying 10 20 30 until I find a strenght that suits my need Mixing that regulation and amps is more diff...

Re: Polycarbonate and glass cleaning

I've only used rubbing alcohol on polycarbonate. Since it is for an optical application I would not use any type of cream abrasives. It may seem like it makes a car shiny when you look At it, but those micro abrasions are just blur when you look Through them unless you have access to lense grinding ...

Re: Amps showing up on display while welding

May be there are 2 modules, one that maintain amps when the arc enlarges, and one that add amps and tension when the stick is touching the metal. There is. The mode of operation for stick welding is called "Constant Current". There is also "Constant Voltage" and various hybrid t...

Tillman are great. If you're doing large welds with flux core or higher deposition hard wire you will need a heat shield though.

All right, I can't contain myself. Tonight's performance actually got a standing ovation. I was so task-focused, I didn't realize it immediately. What a rush! Steve I'm really quite envious of this whole adventure. I'm very closed off and find public speaking terribly difficult, so to me, seeing so...

I will buy a less dark screen , (the actual is numb.11 but not recent )I suppose there are different qualities for those fixed darkening glasses, may I have advantage to buy them from 3M for instance ? The straight line stuff seems to come with time, as does how you see the work piece. Learning to focus on the pool and control it is important, but once it becomes a foregone conclusion other things come into focus. Then you start seeing the joint, the slag, a corner or turn coming up, etc. and afte...

Re: .035 spray transfer spatter spatter smoke smoke

I'd try a push instead of drag, Spray transfer works best with a slight push angle.

.035 usually started to spray at about 24.5v and 375ipm, about an inch ctwd. Maybe make sure that the tip isn't recessed and giving you a little too much ctwd.

Re: opinions - quality on 2F X block 6013

If you like to do one handed, a thing that I and a lot of other people do is put your other hand behind your back and hold on to a belt loop, pocket, waist band, etc. It helps to stabilize your torso and shoulder girdle. This is especially usefull if you are standing up and doing vertical or overhea...

Re: Quality of welds opinions

Looks a little big for 1/8" thick metal. The weld only needs to be the thickness of the metal. For the sake of practice you can make them any size you like, but its also good practice to get them to the "right" size, what ever that may be. Welding wire is pretty expensive relative to ...

Aside from the previous considerations, which are great, I would add that with either mig or self shielded flux core- use something, a fan or what ever, to draw the smoke away (not blow, draw). The fumes can have a cumulative effect and are not good. Just a rule of thumb- if you can strike a lighter...

Re: Wire feed speed question

Just speculation, and I didn't want to stick my neck out too far, but- The spec sheet for L-56 specifies co2 for the lower speeds, and only get into mixed gasses at higher deposition rates. So maybe its a property of the wire? I've run L-56 a ton, but always at lower rates and always with co2. Never...

Very interesting!
The manufacturer/distributor may want to see that. You never quite know where or in what the rest of that heat may end up.

Just as I was thinking "that looks like delamination..." I noticed the title of the pics.

Re: 7018 basic tips

I'm sure there are some numbers to it for travel speed through a weld with a given electrode, at X current, etc. but what it usually comes down to is not going too fast or too slow, but "just right". That's where the art of welding occurs. The science of it (numbers, etc.) is important to ...

Re: Eliminating Arc Blow

Eh, just in looking at it, with the backing plate acting as tabs, I wouldn't go straight to arc blow unless there was a great deal of magnetism detectable on that set up. On 3G the most common error which also fits the description of the behavior described is bad electrode angle- too steep. Its alwa...

Carbon arc gouging is a good skill to have, but the primary skill within that is not getting burnt to a crisp. I'm thinking that it won't be a big deal once these three open root positions are mastered. That varies from per...

I can't be sure about other machines, but the last open root I ran was on a miller dynasty. The arc force/dig was set at a little past 12:00 and ran like a champ, so maybe 60%? 65 amps is cold. 75 is the minimum I've heard recommended for a 3/32 land (root face) with a 3/32 gap. I preferred to run it at 78 or so to get the hang of it, then about 80ish with proficiency. One trick that the instructor showed me was to toggle the rod (not whipping) back a little to direct the ...
