Re: Cracked starter mount
Odd that I had a call on what appears to be the same hole (small block) shortly after I posted. I was able to get a bit more information on it No pre-heat is required for this type of repair with stick. Keep a large area or entire block insulated and covered high temp blankets, wadding, etc. Leave j...

Re: Cracked starter mount
I have been able to observe a tiny amount of work from a casting repair specialist. The casting stays insulated during pre-heat and work. It is then completely covered for post-heat. Sometimes they sit for several hours or overnight if it is late in the day. I can confirm that a buzz box and nickel ...

Re: Replacement MIG gun for 350p
You can use any gun you want that is Miller compatible. The auto feature is programmed to detect different XR components and the reach unit, not standard mig guns. I can tell you that full tilt will melt <400A guns. I have a Miller and Bernard 400A and the Miller diffuser/consumables will work on bo...

Re: DIY TIG foot pedal
The schematic for an old Lincoln that I needed to test shows the cable shield grounded to the metal connector at the machine. That sends HF interference straight to earth ground through the machine chassis. However, it doesn't show that the pedal chassis is grounded. I don't see a ground on the old ...

Re: Protecting outdoor metal work table?
It would be easier if he simply made the entire table from aluminum :D I'm almost with you on that. It may come down to the question of how it is going to be used and abused. The stuff is spendy too. Would aluminum riddled with gouges and raises work the same as a rust pitted steel? The second prod...

Re: Protecting outdoor metal work table?
You're thinking of the stuff gets slathered on a new rifle at the factory. The stuff that I posted a picture of will dry to the touch (slight waxy feel)and claims that you can weld through it. The stuff in the link claims to dry to the touch as well. If you can weld through it, you can ground throu...

Edit: I looked up the mil-spec #'s and found this. Not sure how close these two products are. http://www.cosmolinedirect.com/cosmoline-rp-342-heavy-spray-military-grade-rust-preventive/ I don’t think you’d want to use the Cosmoline product you linked on a table you weld upon. It’s very thick, almos...

Re: Troubleshooting erratic shielding with CK9
The air leak troubleshooting is just elimination method I guess. I could put some soapy water at that junction I suppose. Water + electrified stuff though? When I tested my torch, I had the machine on dc, amps all the way down, high frequency start off. The pre/post flows set to max. Naturally, you...

Re: Protecting outdoor metal work table?
This stuff is simply badass. I'm down to my last two cans of the hoard and I'm not sure if I can get more of it. It was originally acquired through a now defunct oil tool company. I first tested it on a shiny, used brake rotor and left it outside in the pouring rain. Months later, I wiped it off wit...

Re: Simple TIG positioner idea
I've looked into the Lenco rotary grounds or just a wrap or two of bare copper wire around a centered shaft to avoid the issue. I found this video from Terry and I think his wheel design would suit most of my needs. I watched a couple of his other videos to get the full details of it. In fact, most ...

Re: Troubleshooting erratic shielding with CK9
I purchased a profax gas flow tester part# 50020 for ~$10 and I find myself using it more than I thought I would. It has a cfh scale and it agrees with the readings on a smith flow meter. The only other tester that I found with a cfh scale is sold by CK. More expensive, but the mouth appears larger....

Re: Help identify this torch?
Your torch is a vintage Tweco blackgold.
I've settled on purchasing a CK flex loc as soon as I can justify the need for an articulating torch. I didn't read anything bad about the TEC torches when I was searching either.

You can wrap a bare, copper wire ground around it if you can't clamp to it or clamp it down tighter. A good idea that I got from Jody.

This is the first thing that came to mind. Unfortunately I do not have experience with facing or banding yet. Maybe you can find something similar that it is your amperage range and doesn't require ordering miles of it at a time. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us/consumables/hardfacing/Pages/hard...

Re: Tig noob and Syncrowave 250 resto project
The machine has been working VERY well with the temporary fix in place. I finally machined the new insulator and spec'd it a little thicker. The ptfe has tested good so far and this should be the end all of the HF problems. Thanks for the suggestion, Arno!

Re: MIG Machine settings
You probably already have a 20A, but there is usually other stuff plugged in. You don't want anything else sapping power from it while you are welding.
I had to install the circuit at the old place just to run an air compressor. That outlet was borrowed when I had the need.

Re: MIG Machine settings
Keep the stickout to ~3/8" for less than .030 wire and no more than 1/2". That will help with both problems if you are not doing this already. Clean the joints and ground clamping area down to shiny metal. Bevel the edges for most joint types when you are running at the top end. Add a litt...

Re: Drill Bits
Another thing is the flute length on the double ended. They are mainly sold for sheet metal, so a flute length that is twice or more the thickness of the material is preferred. Something like this 3/16" x 2-3/16" Long x 1/2" Flute Length.

Can you recommend a drill bit brand to me that can handle a bunch of torque? Thanks! Have you checked your drill chuck and bits for excessive runout? There are tool and die shops that have the experience for this type of repair. I couldn't see myself risking a customer if I caused more damage. Helping people get the best result usually adds up in the long run. This is an example of a shop that can, at the least, provide some insight. http://www.m...

Re: Tig coolers
I agree. It seems like a neat idea but I think the fridge side will turn into a maintenance hassle in the end. If you decide that you want to build your own cooler there isn't much to it as you have found. A 10k+ btu core, muffin fan, 3-4 Gallon reservoir, and a Procon pump(~100GPH@50psi) would be s...

Re: Tig Noob
Definitely get some 1/16 as it is the recommended size and try both back to back. One of the things that I had to break myself of was camping out in one spot on the pedal. I'm less concerned of the amperage settings are now and it is generally set to mid-high range of what those welding charts spec....
