Neat Gas Coverage Trick???

In Jody's latest video on spool gun welding he shows checking gas coverage using a heated piece of titanium. Is there a more affordable metal to get similar results?

He says in the video you can do the same with stainless steel, 16 ga., if I recall. The SS is a bit less sensitive, but will show the coverage pattern nearly as well.
