I didn't realize I had so few close-ups.

This may be the same weld Richard posted, but close up...

[EDIT] On review, this weld appears in Richard's post, just barely right of center near the top of the image.

...and one more.

[EDIT] I "think" this weld appears in Richard's picture as well, on the same pipe as the last, the next weld down, but taken from a different angle.

Having my niece work there and personally guide my tour gave me great access.

Thanks for putting those up Steve. I sure would have expected better( looking) welds. They obviously held and did their job but there are guys out here who would cut their balls off for a shot to weld for NASA and the ones that do....don't look like they care too much...Just my opinion from what I'm looking at.

Sorry about the thread-jack Zoomer

Lt Badd's pics show a bigger overall pic of the engine. Can't tell much from the pic but it doesn't look like they used alot of mechanical fastener so I am betting alot of that was fabbed on a bench and then fastened into the motor. I am sure there was a few cramped space welds but the overall welding on "the worlds greatest machine" leaves alot to be desired.

Seeing these welds was a great reminder to me not to judge a weld on appearance alone. It was also refreshing because I tend to beat myself up over welds I've done I feel should look better. You know these welds were tested six ways from Sunday for a man-rated vehicle... Likely DP, UT, RT, hydro, etc. I've never studied magnetic flux testing to know if it works on stainless, but I'd think it should.

I'll add it was obvious many welders were involved in the various sub-assemblies, and there was some awesome looking work as well, but I took pictures with the intent of calling out trolls on every facebook group I moderate, so focused on the "less than weldporn" welds.

But tig welding is all about appearance...at least thats what we strive for. I know we can't always turn out weld porn but I have cut away better welds on a damned beer keg and made it better....I just realized I am a farm equipment repairman bashing welds made by NASA welders.I need to shut up now. :|

My job is weld pressure pipe butts according to wps and pass visual, X-ray and pressure test faster than the next bloke. Porn is definitely optional and not even on the wps. I do the best I can given the other requirements.
