Help welding Cast

I am a teacher at a high school in Wyoming. Our JrRotc Company asked me to fix their cannon. We all know how budgets are so I'm trying to help them out.

The cannon has a flaw from the casting. Not sure the best way to repair the cannon. It has a sleeve for firing blanks, so structural not an issue for the repair.

Defect is about 3/8" at the deepest point.

They will repaint it once all the repairs are completed.

Thanks for the help,
Schutte

Based on my excellent results on this small cast TIG brazing job, I'd do the same on that cannon.

Since it's blank firing it wouldn't bother me to braze it.

Dude... That's awesome.

Hey bob! what'd you do today?

Aaaah, you know. Welded a cannon back togther

Here is what I would recommend, TIG it with stainless, stainless tends to give it a bit more flex, might even honestly, though it will require more work, be better for you to weld it back up without putting the piece back on if that was even in your thoughts.

Just get a nice bottom "tinned" with stainless and then your just stacking beads on beads on beads until your above the surface, ground it down, flush it up and your good to go.

OR if you want to put the piece back on, do just that and bevel the edges slightly so when it gets finished smooth, there is some weld left to keep it together. Make sure its clean first though, or as clean as it can get. I have welded cast parts from commercial kitchens and getting them clean enough is always tricky but it can be done.

Hard to tell but that looks more like an air pocket in the casting rather than a missing piece.

I have no idea. I tried to upload a comment and it was tripled and wouldn't let me delete it. Internet is goofy the last couple days.

I love that! I get to say I worked on the Hindenburg's second cousin today, but I have never said, "I fixed a cannon..."

I work with liquid hydrogen tankers. About five of them would fill the Hindenburg. In other words, I work on rolling bombs that travel the same roads as my grandkids' school busses, so I take my job pretty seriously.

I'll agree with you there but my internet was acting really strange and now I read about this giant world wide hack...wonder if that had anything to do with it? Everything was fine yesterday and today, no problems at all.

Yeah it was weird. I rebooted my computer and my router about 10 times and it was still messed up. Been fine the last 24 hrs.

Odd, good its working out now, darn gremlings.

Whatever happened to welding this cannon back together? Are you leaving the firepowder in it or removing it?

Well, here it its.

Not that smooth with the process. Dinged it with a chipping hammer to stress it a little. Try to look like the rest of the cast.
Hard for me to tie it in with the cast. Ugly edges.
Should have tried to clean out the cavity more, very difficulty for me to keep the impurities out of the weld. UGH

Not very clean, but a little paint and on the bottom side should work them.

Thanks for all the help.
LOVE the site!

Looked way to easy on the video!

Hit it with a needle scaler and you should get much closer to the pitted finish.
