Brass to Stainless

Hey Everyone. I have been tasked with welding a floor mounted door stop to a stainless steel plate. The problem is that the door stop seems to be coated brass or bronze (found out the hard way)? I am not exactly sure how to do this. I tried using a tig rod we have called arc braze 157 t. We have used this on cast repairs and it works for that but not this. I then decided to silver solder it which works but is taking longer than anticipated. The ss plate is 3"x 4" x .120" and the base of the door stop is about .25". I will try and get some pics, but any advice would be great. Thanks

Use a silver braze rod or wire that's 45% silver or higher. I've tiged on several brass and copper fittings to ss heat exchangers for refrigeration systems. The high silver will wet into the ss just before it does the brass. If it's heavy brass consider preheating it a little before you start.

I will try that. Can't remember what my silver braze is. I will check that though. The ss did wet before the brass. How much of a preheat? Brass and brazing are not my strong suit.

Too hot to touch. Some brass casting will give you pin holes matter how you braze it. If it does, and the holes bother you just grind them out a little bit and go back over them like you would with any other weld.

Josh, I think the brazing force is strong with you, you should post more of your work, I know I'd like to see it.

And for comeback purposes: I believe he means "are NOT allowed." I'm sorry I figured that I would take the opportunity

Are you preheating? Or just focusing your heat and dialing in your settings.

Took your advice and pre heated. It took a while to fine tune my flame and keep the flow right.

If the back view doesn't say, "ducks in a row..."

Nicely done!

Hey, byumetalman,

I work right next to Bayou Metal Supply's Slidell, LA location. That company name isn't the source of your username, is it?

Ah, Brigham Young...

You can see where Bayou Metal and byumetal seemed to match, I'm sure.

My mistake.
