Hi, My husband built a basic propane flat grill BBQ with 1/4″ carbon steel and three burners. So proud! He turned it on high to test it, and in about two minutes the flat top began to bow a 1/2 inch high. The burners are about an inch below the plate. Are they too close or is there another cause of this? I think it went down with cooling, but has the bowing weakened the plate?

General welding questions that dont fit in TIG, MIG, Stick, or Certification etc.
The bow has stretched and stressed the metal. 1 inch may or may not be too close. That would be determined by btu output, burner size in area, and burner design. Warping is a side effect of uncontrolled expansion. If you were to simply remove the warped top and lay a new plate down but not secure it, so that it has room to expand then the burner location may be fine.
I have more questions than answers
