I am wanting to weld a 1/2" thick plate(flat stock)to the open end of a 6" pipe(5/16"wall) using 1/8" 6011. Do I need to bevel the pipe, space between pipe and plate or both ? Thanks!

Bevel the pipe and have a gap. You'll need a root face as well, make the gap the same as the root face

If you mean like this picture, I'd just set the pipe on flat and weld it.

I’m with Craig. Both of the other answers are correct, depending on pipe thickness and how you plan on stressing the finished product.

Thanks to all that replied. What I’m making is an adapter for a vibrahammer on a skid steer to drive 4 1/2” O.D.pipe. The wall thickness of the 6” pipe adapter is 5/16” I will weld it to the 1/2” plate and then weld a short 4” piece of 2 3/8”> .250 wall to the 1/2” plate that will go inside the cup of the hammer. Thanks
