General welding questions that dont fit in TIG, MIG, Stick, or Certification etc.

jody, thank you on your responce to my 6g 6 inch carbon steel root pass situation. i did what you suggested in regard to feathering my tacks and after little more than one week the tacks are tied in and they look really good. i have slowed the root pass process just a little bit, thus i have no more undercut and the entire inside circumfrence of the pipe looks very sound,except for the very top when i have finished welding there is that round like ring. could you please advise on how to eliminate or lesson that ring. thank you.

You are stopping too soon. Need to continue welding a bit past the tie-in. Remember that penetration always happens behind your arc.
