I have never had to pass a mag test first off. I have been given a mild steel job that will be mag tested. I was told to weld one side and get as much pen. as I can. The sample given to me to copy that still has a seem on the back side with no pen., wont that fail? The item gets filled with lead before the test but since lead has no iron it's not going to help anything as I see it. Or is a mag test just for outside cracks? Thoughts?

Mag test is for surface and shallow cracks only. Can't tell you anything else.

Thanks for the reply! Do they look for under-cuts?
