Im wondering if anyone can let me know if you can weld magnesium on a motor bike, if so what would the process be, Thanks

yes it can be done. tig is the process. but it is very tricky ,

oil soaked magnesium castings have made many a preacher cuss.

its the same basic process as welding an aluminum casting. But remember, magnesium shavings will catch fire and you need a fire extinguisher rated for metal fires.

here is the basic process...

route crack with carbide burr
clean area all around weld to shiny bright metal removing all oxides and coatings
degrease with acetone and let dry
preheat gently to around 250f
tig weld using az101 filler rod ( az101 seems to be the best all around rod for repairs but i assuming you dont know the exact mag alloy you have)


use as tight an arc as possible ...mag will let you practically bury the arc

add a little extra rod when you stop each bead to avoid crater cracks.

run small beads and let cool a little after every bead.

also here is the biggest tip...use 50/50 or 80/20 argon/helium if you can.

lastly, if you are not a pretty good tig welder, find someone who is and get them to weld it....its not easy
