can anyone suggest what grade of aluminium to use for a utility type trailer? 6061 seems the best, but pricey.

Check pricing on 5052. It's frequently used in Marine applications and weldable.

I use 6061 T-6 for 90% of what I build.

It might be a bit more pricey but its about as strong as its gonna get with a good, easy weld ability.

I find it easier to sleep at night knowing I got the best stuff for the job, especially if its not for me and someone else is using it.

Not that other grades won't hold or are no good, I just prefer the strongest.
