Lap joints

Hello,
I am new to welding. I am now doing lap joints for a pull up test. I am using 7018 1/8". My question is what makes a strong weld? Is there a way to make the weld stronger? I did one for my first time and the result was about 8700. It is a single-fillet lap joint and the diameter is 1".
