Is grounding to a table instead of the work peice advantagous?

No, because if you get an interruption between the table and the job, such as mess or tooling, you'll end up with stray arc marks on your job where the ground path tries to jump the gap

Especially with mig welding. Those keep spitting out wire regardless of ground.

as mentioned above no. however you can use a third hand that has copper feet to connect to the work. that can provide better connection and reduce arc marks.
tweak it until it breaks
