I am looking for confirmation of a phrase. Obviously, since the forties, making "hot rod" cars often involves "welding". This makes it hard to find any example of what I suspect are other uses of the phase in welding.

1) Do you know of any example of calling a person who is a good (or mediocre) stick welder a "hot rod"? (this may be old usage)

2) I have seen the technique of cutting steel with a stick referred to as "hot

3) Did "hot rod" or "hot rodding" ever refer to the stick or stick welding?

I've only ever heard it in used in welding to apply to 2, cutting with an electrode. It makes a fair bit of sense in my mind, you're running the current "hot" for your given diameter of rod, it often heats up glowing hot, and you're pushing it to its limits, sort of like a modded car I suppose.

Not sure if this is "hot rodding" but If I want to tack something thin and need a crisp start, I run a bead on a bit of scrap for a few seconds then place the tack weld straight away, while the rod is still hot.
