Nice. IMO ;) yours might differ.
I ran about 10 passes on the front there.

Not perfect I know, but it will pull the 20,00 lbs load easy.
Pics are deceiving, I ran about 10 passes on each side, smoothed them with a grinder, than ran more passes, but still turned out OK.

Shouldv'e passed with flying colors. ;)
Nope, I was to lazy to turn the oven on, these rods had been cold for months.

I've been around many failed welds (aka under welding) :D

I know I won't have a customer coming to me complaining that I welded it to good, and that it didn't break.

This is 1/2 in steel. every bit of it, except the wall of the receiver tube, that's 1/4 inch.

I beveled those plates to have more room to stack beads.

Really though, I did over weld it.

It was poorly enginered by me, I could have bolts bolting that little piece of 1/2 inch plate to the underside....
But,
I wanted it to be strong.

I trust my welds, they have proventhem selves over the years.
I've welded many hitches on trucks.

That is a grain wagon9 gravity unload) with about 15,000lbs of barley in it.
That White truck ( dodge 1ton Cummins 4x4 ) has two 1,200lbs round bales on the back. I mounted that cannonball bed on that truck.
Those trailer tires are sunk in the ground about 8 inchs.
The truck hooked up to the front of the white truck is a Dodge 3/4 ton Cummings 4x4.
I put the bed, front and rear bumpers and hitches on the white truck.
And, the Black truck is the one I just put the hitch on in this thread.
My welds are subject to the utmost abuse.
That Black truck is forced to haul a John Deere dozer and trailer.
Estimated weight of trailer and dozer is 20,000 lbs minimum....
Get my drift????
I will get you a pic of this Black 3/4 ton truck hauling a 20,000 lbs load.

That 20,000lbs load is what tweaked this hitch in the first place.

Now what would have happened if I had used my Hobart Handler 135???
Its rated for 1/4 inch in a single pass.
So I could run multi pass, with a preheat with a cutting torch, right?????????????
We have to haul 16 round bales each weighing 1,200lbs.
So do the math on that. 19,200lbs just for the bales.
Than add a 3,000-4,000lbs gooseneck trailer.....
Now what would happen if the hitch would break off going 45mph on the road.
Traffic coming the other way???
Little Honda's that get 40mpg.
Many people could get killed or wounded.
Liability insurance through the roof.
Awww that'll hold.
Your name is on every weld you make.

Why do you think there's so much bashing and mud slinging on welding forums???
Because people come on trying to weld a hitch on there hwy trailer with their harbor frieght mig.
Well Gosh,
Says right on the front of the machine, it'll weld 1/4 inch steel.

I think the lack of sunlight up there is affecting your disposition. He prefaced his question with the statement of not trying to poke fun and stated that he's new to welding.

Now if you think of this logically you welded most of this overhead, as observed from all the pictures of you sleeping on a grain shovel. So most of it is under welded because if it was over welded you would have had to flip the truck over with the frontend loader.

Lighten up a little.

follow me here....you welded under the truck therefore you "under welded it" If you flipped the truck over and stood over the hitch, you would be welding over the truck, therefore "over welding it"......(insert a slap to the head)

I got a old mate (retired now) motor mechanic and self taught stick welder. His business was around earth moving and farm machinery repair out in the bush (western Queensland). Many customers called him to repair equipent with broken welds and they used to ask him why his welds never broke but other's (included OEM's) did. His answer was always the same - it was a beautiful weld there just was not enough of it.

Let's give our mate John a break here - his welds are obviously not going to let go under punishment (isn't that the purpose of welding?) he was welding in the mud and he has a snow covered mountain for a back drop. :P :P :P

I know a man, wanted to be an "A" mechanic for APCI (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc). His name is Richard.

To be an "A" class mechanic for APCI, you must pass a weld test. Richard argued with the weld instructor for over an hour, that it was impossible to weld "overhead" because of gravity.

I love to do the impossible...

My opinion?

You overbuilt the shit out of this...

It will never fail. You'll pull the wheels off that truck before you'll bust that hitch.

Nicely welded. But, as soon as you had 1/4" of weld on 1/4" of steel, or 3/8" weld on 3/8" of steel, you were done. Everything after that was practice.
