I'm trying to learn how to weld (tig) I bought a welder Lincoln Precision Tig 185 and not doing so well. I found this site tonite and it's great. I'm alittle confused on where to set amps to get started. Is there a standard for metal thickness or type? Any help appreciated

a rule of thumb for amperage settings is 1 amp for every thousandth of thickness up to a max of about 250.

this is just a ball part figure and there are lots of exeptions, but this rule will get you in the ball park.

using carbon steel as a benchmark, stainless needs less amps, aluminum needs more.

good luck bro,
