I was playing around and tried a couple ways of protecting the back of the weld and thought that some might be interested in my tries

Yes I know my stainless still does not shine, but cleans up nice with a wire brush.

I made a aluminum foil tray then using 20 seconds of post flow filled it with argon before welding

The first photo shows the aluminum foil tray with the spoon handle inside

the second shows the top of the welds. the right weld was done a different way

the third shows the bottom

the forth shows the bottom brushed

Spoon handle unknown stainless
30 amps
15 cfh
no filler
not wiped down with acetone

That far right weld was done by using modeling clay on the bottom. It made lots of smoke and an odd shaped weld but no sugaring
