50mm tube, 1.6mm wall thickness on 45 degree angle with stainless steel via butt welding.

Im having a lot of trouble with this.

How many people here walk the cup for this? Freehand with a TIG finger? I have done most practice free handing but im wondering if I should just switch to walking the cup.

I dont like the feel of walking the cup due to the constricted nature of your movement... but it can make much more consistent welds I think.

I've taken 6G pipe tests, but never on such a small diameter, I would think walking the cup on 50mm tube would be difficult, but I don't weld pipe very often.

At 1.6mm wall it shouldn't be hard to get penetration, just need to be consistent, which translates to lots of practice.

Hopefully someone with more recent experience can respond.
