What’s the importance/advantage of using a chill plate?

Reduces distortion and potential overheating of the material. Especially useful on thin material.

Also useful on repair scenarios as it gives something to clamp up to depending what your fixing.

for me its usually thin material. chill plate also helps dam the argon and reduce the need for purging.
also it can be used to lay weld metal up against, ie use thick stainless to back aluminium so you can fill a hole.
