No, I like to use the dip move, dip move technique.
I just move to edge of each ripple to give me a consistent bead.

This is a video of me welding something at work.
It has a slight gap on the sides. All I do is add more rod, move quickly to the next spot and add more rod before the keyhole wicks open to much.

I bought this off Amazon recently, not very expensive $14 USA. Called 1-2-3 Blocks

As expected, half of what they cost here.....

Was a bit outside my comfort zone yesterday.
Part from a small piece earlier this year I haven't stick welded in about 10 years. Burned about 20 rods OK 48.00, that's 7018 for you non-yellow guys ;)

This welded pretty awful.
It was like the metal was more than one layer and of different types.

Needed some ballast in the rear of my tractor when I have the snowthrower mounted. I built a steel box that mounts on the frame extension last year and was waiting for some scrap steel to come along to make little suitcase weights. I got some scrap laser cutouts, tacked them together on the corners and added a handle. I didn't have a tig welder when I made the steel box, that's stick welded. John Deere wants about $700 for their ballast setup, I made this for about $50.

Shocker, more stainless repair work...Some baskets used to process vanilla, as you can imagine it is impossible to get all the oils out that are in the metal...So it's fun. I feed on this stuff, love the challenge of making a mangled piece back in shape.
