Ok I have half open corner joint to weld ,1/4 flat steel to 3/4 flat. After I run my up hill bead is it ok to run a cover pass over it going down hill or will it weaken the weld in any way. Also should I weld the inside of the corner first. Im using a miller 210 with er70s .35 wire with 80/20 argon. Any tips or suggestions.

Hi there,

The thing to remember about vertical down welding is that you have to go fast enough to keep ahead of the molten metal. Keep the arc on the fresh metal at all times. If done correctly, it wont "weaken" the joint but its not as strong as vertical up or even flat welding. Done incorrectly and you might as well just use glue to stick the metal together. Jody has some very good arc shots of this correct technique in some of his videos.
