I have tried migging copper to steel using silicone bronze and straight argon gas as suggested by other welders but all I get is a glob or a ball when I tack weld. I experimented using steel wire and it appears to be a better weld, the steel and copper mix together and form a smoother tack that appears strong. My question is over time will there be some sort of reaction in the weld because of the mixing of dissimilar metals.

That's an interesting question. I'm a noob but have been working on boats for a while and in the marine industry, brass and bronze plugs(copper alloys) are regularly use on cast iron blocks and exhaust manifolds with not ill effects. On that basis I would think it safe.

I just didn't know it was possible to weld copper to steel.
