Re: Arc Welding Beginner back at it
We started at TSTC with 6010 stringer beads and stacked them 50% overlapping with the previous bead It is a great way to start and the benifit is you can just weld the full plate one direction, and then turn it 90 degrees and fill it that direction. After a few layers each way you can either try a d...

Re: Help picking first TIG Machine ?
Go with an Everlast I have two and love them both. Consider getting a Tig/Stick/Plasma unit with AC/DC tig that way if you want to go with aluminum down the road you will have that capability. And having a plasma cutter around the shop is extremely useful and you will use it more than you might thin...

Re: The what I welded today (/whenever) thread (pics please)
A little fast and dirty intake job for a friend. It had a Nitrous outlet puck installed and a direct port nitrous system, we are removing both and going with a Nitrous Outlet stinger plate. I needed to weld up all the holes from previous nitrous installs. I will post finished pictures once it's comp...

Re: How do I prevent tungsten contamination and discoloratio
When you first start you will almost certainly contaminate your tungsten by touching, and if you don't you are most likely too far from your base material. Watch welding tips and tricks TIG welding for beginners and he shows the symptoms of poor tig welding technique. Seat time and a steady hand wil...

Re: dull looking beeds on aluminum and amp related question
I have noticed that when I use certain filler wire it dulls the appearance of my beads on aluminum. They most shiny beads I get are when I have a lap joint or corner joint that does not require filler wire. But some wires are better than others as far as bead appearance. I am welding on 4043 mostly.

Re: Miller Digital Infinity
Just got the Black Ops Miller Digital Infinity and love it so far. The color of the shade is much more neutral than my previous 2 Digital elites (less green). And the controls, alarms, timers etc... are a very cool addition. As for the headgear I plan to switch it out with my original Coolband 1 Eve...

Re: Cleaning material
I used 3m Scotch brite roloc pads on a die grinder to clean the edges of aluminum sheet metal if it is dirty from the water cutting that we use. They last a while and clean the aluminum to a great finish.

Re: question about grinding tungsten
Firstly thank you very much. Second depending on if you start with a completely new tungsten or if it already has a slight taper to it it takes around 30 seconds to a minute. Also it ONLY reacts with tungsten from what i've found and only when the tungsten is red hot, so pretty low risk. The benefit...

Re: question about grinding tungsten
You could get chemsharp its about $15 a jar and lasts a very long time. A lot of people do not like this stuff but there is a learning curve and once you perfect it there is no better tungsten taper. I weld .090 aluminum 8 hours a day and only use a grinder to start the point and then finish in the ...

Re: Help me with my Aluminum issue
This same problem drove me crazy on the Dynasty 350 at work for about a week before i figured out the tungsten diameter was set wrong. Glad you figured it out with the gas leak, but if others have this problem check the tungsten diameter setting if your machine has it. I thought of something....My m...

Re: Am I crazy!? Starting out with TIG.
Get an everlast 256s Its an AC/DC Tig, Stick, Plasma cutter combo unit for around $1800 USD. It has pulse settings which could help you with getting good bead appearance on tig welding before you master pedal control. I've had mine for a little over 3 years and love it. They come with a 5 year warra...

Re: Youtube Aluminum Pulse Tig Welding
Correct me if I'm wrong, But aluminium is hot short, meaning weak when hot, so if it doesn't crack when its hot, It'll be right....right? Well it is extremely prone to cracking if you let it cool too rapidly. I always have to taper off my amperage and add filler metal at the end of these welds to a...

Re: Youtube Aluminum Pulse Tig Welding
Some say you shouldnt fuse without filler on alu but I've made a few joints like this in 4 mm alu, without puls though. I like what you just showed, please also post a pic of the finished joints. I would guess you are about 100-120 amps on 3-4 mm thickness. Ballpark of my settings would be: .090&qu...

Re: Aluminum fuel tank questions
I make dedicated fuel cells for a performance shop and we simply hang a fuel pump using submersible fuel hose and a 1/4" barb fitting. We drill and tap a 3/8" NPT x 6AN 90 degree fitting for a 1/4" npt barb. We cut the hose so that the sock hangs barely above the base of the tank.
