Re: What TIG welder is good for a beginner
The Miller 211 I have has the spool mate for aluminum and it does not work so good. I cant dial it in for some reason. What's your puddle doing? If it looks like swiss cheese or some kind of fungal infection instead of a nice shiny puddle then you're likely running the wrong polarity. It has to be ...

Re: Grounding your welding table?
How would that work out for any electrode positive operations? If the table makes a better ground than the electrode then it seems that you may be up the creek unless you disconnect the ground.

Re: tig newbie first welds and first project
Don't just snap out of the puddle. Use a piece of copper to trail out at the end of your weld or back out the same way that you came in while sweeping the torch angle backward. That should stop the craters. Give it an extra dab or two of filler on the end as well before you back out. I've never had ...

Re: DIY things to rest your arm/wrist/hand when tig welding
The first thing that I ever made with tig was gonna be a giant dice cube. The boss had a ton of 5" X 5" X 1/4" flat bar laying around so I fit it up, tacked it and fillet welded all of the corners. It was my first try at tig welding and it had a shit ton of porosity in the welds. The...

Re: Mig bead help
I recently worked in a fab shop for a couple of weeks and Doug says to me, Ray, your beads look really good but you're getting too much spatter because you're not holding the nozzle close enough to the weld. As soon as I tried it Doug's way, I stopped getting BBs and was only left with micro spatter...

Re: tig newbie first welds and first project
The slag is from oxidation when tig welding. If you start to see sparks flying from the puddle......you're welding over oxidation. Not cooling your metal down between passes will make the slag get worse with every pass. The smaller the scrap that you're working with, the more need you'll have for fr...

Re: tig newbie first welds and first project
I don't believe that your problem stems from crap embedded in the metal. See how your beads look like caterpillars crawling across the metal? That's called cold lap. When you light up on the metal, you should have enough amperage to cause it to puddle instantly. That molten puddle should be as wide ...

Your hourly rate seems a bit on the high side. Here in Georgia about $75/hr is standard unless it's aluminum or stainless in which case it goes up to about $90/hr. Why $90/hr for aluminum? I honestly can't answer that one since it's even easier to weld than steel. Thin walled stainless is much harde...

You should hear hard facing pop. That stuff pings and pops for hours on end. It will throw tiny metal flakes in your eye if you're not careful too.
I wouldn't wory about it if you're not seeing cracks forming. It could just be due to the cooler night temperatures now that fall is upon us.

Re: New to forum/half hour northeast of Atlanta
My machine puts out 250A @ 60% duty cycle of Aluminum smoking power from a mere 30A 240V input. It set me back $2500 plus $450 for the water cooler. You can get the same power out of an Everlast 250EX for $1700 but it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that mine does. Don't wory cause you won't...

Re: Aluminum Bronze Best Uses?
Use it in place of silicone bronze if you need more wear resistance than silicone bronze provides. It's much harder than silicone bronze. Aluminum bronze will also mar the surface of other metals where silicone bronze will not.

Yeah there is but you gotta learn to bump weld anodized aluminum after you get the hang aluminum. Most of the jobs that I've seen on craigslist for this kind of work a...

If you need to double it then just run another identical pair and add a breaker to match. Eazy-peazy. That would give you 120A @ 240V. 15% - 20% safety margin would set you comfortably between 95A & 100A. Just be aware that those old transformer machines are super inefficient and will really jac...

Re: is it worth my time to learn to hand bevel pipe ?
The task is more or less difficult to accomplish depending on the size of your grinder and the type of abrasive wheel that you use. Dewalt fiber/abrasive wheels work much better than those crappy Diablo wheels that home depot sells. A 7" angle grinder is gonna take the meat off a whole helluva ...

How ya doing Rickster, I used to work over there by the airport at Zappa's Precision Welding. Personally, I would just just plunk down the cash for some #6-2 stranded copper wire, pvc conduit and electrical box, then run that wire underground and have myself 60A @ 240V on tap. Unless you plan on rar...

My old boss operated under a philosophy that was a combination of all of these answers. He didn't put his hood on for less than $20. Sometimes he would feel sorry for a customer and do some charity work. He was almost always rude, obnoxious and blatantly racist and sexist toward customers and that s...

Brother, You can't afford to kiss that job good bye. I drive big rigs too and I can't stand it. It's a thankless job and I catch some sort of hell almost on a daily basis. All cars come with Gremlins, it's just a question of how many and how long will they wait to come out of hibernation ;) At least the late AMC had the honesty to actually name a car "Gremlin"... Steve S Wayne and Garth had a stretch Pacer. Isn't that about the same thing as a Gremlin?

This piece mounts directly to the top side of the engine block. Top radiator hose is piped into it. The bolts have nothing to do with the leak. The problem is that it is molded in two pieces.....the body and a top cover similar to an AK47 receiver. Not sure how the top cover is attached but I don't ...
