Re: Fine Setting
I'll comment that it's wise to set your course dial so your desired setting will be in the top half of the fine adjustment. This gives you the finest adjustment. If you look at Dave's explanation, you'll see if you're looking for, say, 90A, you can get that with either the lowest coarse setting, or ...

I had some coupons go through tensile test recently (for procedure qualification). 1/4" 304l SS. TIG coupon, two tensiles, and MIG coupon, two tensiles. Both passed. The result you want to see is under "Failure mode", and should read, "Ductile--Weld" All four coupons tested ...

It's the nature of welders to bust each others' chops, but when that's all one is doing, it's well over the top.
Let's not descend completely into the seventh-grade locker room.

Re: Problem with acetylene
An acetylene bottle contains a porous media, typically pumice, and acetone in which the acetylene is dissolved. A chief culprit in acetone coming from a bottle that's been upright for the required minimum time is voids in the porous media. When drawing acetylene, it can behave like soda in a bottle ...

I finally did get the sdvosb certification. The bullshit never really ends though, and it looks like I'll need to file some more paperwork to view export controlled documents. I didn't spot this thread yesterday, but for Memorial Day, I offer tribute to my uncle, LtJG John Keith, who was the first operational casualty of VF-17, the Jolly Rogers. His F4U Corsair was hit by AAA during a strafing run in the Solomon Islands 1 November 1943. He was forced to ditch, and was una...

Oscar (or anyone with this CK torch), I just received my Swivel Head Torch for my HTP 221 and was wondering how tight the little round clamp for the swivel head needs to be? I twisted the swivel head and then tightened the clamp and twisted the swivel head and it feels the same and easy to swivel s...

N95, if they fit good, are sufficient for hex-chrome and most other welding fume. Even the megacorp that destroyed us a few years ago considered them adequate, and they were safety ASSHOLES.

Re: Tungsten prep for aluminum
... and Steve, how would you prep your lanthanated tungsten before welding aluminum? I make a short taper to the next size down. i.e. For a 1/8" tungsten, I'll taper it to 3/32, assuming that's the power range I need. 1/16" for a 3/32 tungsten. I do this for any tungsten on HFAC, includin...

Sorted. That episode would have recorded on Mothers' Day (and my mom wasn't available), so they skipped the week.
They announced it on the podcast's IG page, so I didn't get a notification because of how I access IG.

I've used an aerosol gel heat-block spray, but I haven't done a real comparison to tell you if it had any effect short of costing money.

Re: Another 6010 Question.
If you keep the rod buried real deep then you can't hardly see the arc. Just the reflection from inside the pipe. Only applies to the root pass. And a lot of guys who do it every single day or often and get damn near the same fit up just place it in there and just feel it. It's all muscle memory. Y...

Re: TIG Welder or Still a Loser?
Okay, Chips, that's not weldporn by any measure, but that's pretty damn good for as little time as you have. Yes, one of the things that will make it take a while for your heat to work is too long an arc. GTAW is a "finesse" welding method because of how tightly you have to control arc len...

Re: Another 6010 Question.
For 1/8" 5p+ in a 1/8" gap, I run 105A. Yes, that's outside the suggested range by a little bit. For "bury-rod", it puts the root reinforcement where you want it, so long as you keep the rod 90* to the work, and with a good fit I don't need a hood to weld it once I'm started. Steve
