[quote="kermdawg"... I miss sendin my apprentice to go fetch me 10 feet of falopian tube...[/quote] I like that one. My crew once had a green fire/hole watch who was assigned to pick up rod butts one day. We sent him to the tool crib for a magnet, and he was happily doing his job. About a ...

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!
Jon, Another thought occurred to me, and it might take some time to achieve results. Suppose a bank of magnets, covering, say, a square meter and covered with a thin UV-resistant plastic film were placed film-side-up 10 meters above ground level in a rural (or at least a non-industrial) area. Barrin...

Re: Autogenous welds
I often hear these called "fusion" welds, which is kind of silly, since all welds require fusion. I do them regularly, in one particular instance. I close a 6" hole for an inset gauge on 11 ga. SS with a piece of 16 ga. ss for a surface mounted gauge. The 16 ga. is cut as an irregular...

Methanol, ethanol, isopropynol, even PVA, It's all alcohol. It's just a solvent, like thinner in paint. You'll rarely get perfection with Solar flux; It's likely been spec'd because the engineers feel it's "good enough" for the purpose, and saves money over purging the pipe. This is why th...

Jon, I believe I have enough information now (thanks to turbo388's suggestion) to begin collecting some samples, beginning Monday. I'll create as broad an array as I have the materials and equipment for. If it's not obvious yet, I'm familiar with the scientific method, and the samples will be annota...

If your bottle has been idle long enough for you to suspect separation, then, yes, it's possible.

I have, however, seen one of my posts from here used on another forum in an attempt to pick a fight.

Sand sounds like the perfect capture medium. Thanks for the suggestion. I have access to very clean sand used in our media blasting.

Re: Tig question
When you actually build stuff from 4130, my personal preference is E80-S2 rod. Air cooled E80 filler more closely resembles the properties of 4130 without post-weld heat treatment. I posted on this once before, and discovered I'd lost the article I am citing for this, but am confident in my memory. ...

Re: Why isn't this forum more active?
There are several other welding forums that compete with this one. This forum is really a sub-topic of the wider WeldingTipsandTricks site rather than a stand-alone so is not accessed as much. The spamming problems of a couple of months ago seems to be under control but that will put people off and...

I regularly participate on the "Construction Chat Forum at": http://www.industrialprojectsreport.com/ If you're looking for work, industrial work in particular, this is a great resource. Be warned, though. It's a bit like a job site--people busting each others' balls, though usually in a g...

Jon, I do not suggest that micrometeoroids are "created" by the sun, but rather influenced in their formation by the burst of plasma and accompanying shock wave at the ignition of our sun. Further, not all micrometeoroids enter our atmosphere at hypersonic speeds. I expect many to be orbit...

The stats show nearly 1400 members. There are a number of clearly talented people here willing to help with any problem, and I've learned a lot just by paying attention. Maybe that's it? A lot of "members" join, share their particular problem, get an answer, and move on? I rather enjoy cha...

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!
Plasma is a state of matter where the heat is so intense that atomic nuclei and electrons can no longer hold on to each other. This makes the flow of current through the jet of air from the plasma torch possible and self-sustaining. The "plasma", then, is the superheated, ionized air that ...

Off the top of my head, either your electrode is too far from your weld, or you don't have quite enough gas flow. I'm leaning toward the former. If you're using 3/32 rod, your tungsten should be about 3/16 from the empty joint. Since the argon carries the current, too much or (more likely) too littl...

Go DC+. The only stick rod the hobbyist may encounter that likes DCEN is 7024, a flat-position only rod, and your machine doesn't have enough power to run it in any useful size. 6013=AC 6011=AC 6010=DCEP (Electrode positive) 7018=DCEP If you must run 6011 or 6013 on DC, do it electrode positive, or ...

Ståle, Here's how similar our language roots are: "Takk for all hjelp så langt! Mange gode og nyttige aluminiumstips for en novise innen TIG sveising. Nå vet jeg hvor jeg kan finne hjelp når fremtidige problemer oppstår." I understood 60% or so of that before I read the translation. :D Steve

How big is your root gap and land? You might need to dial it back 5 amps. For 7018 overhead, I prefer to "push" about 15 degrees. If your eyes are sore; What color shirt are you wearing? Light colors will reflect more light from your chest and shoulders. Wear a leather "bib" on y...
