Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!

I'll give that some thought. I could probably provide samples of carbon and 304 stainless steel cut with plasma, carbon steel and possibly cast iron cut with oxy-acetylene, and weld spatter spherules from carbon steel and 304 stainless. Perhaps slag from SMAW welds of various metals (these will cont...

Boy, are you in for a surprise.

Tell me that bullshit in twenty years, when you've finally realized just how much you don't know yet.

Re: Working toward certification

In extreme cold, gas engines start easier. In hazardous locations, diesels are preferred (including your truck, which you already have covered). If you're going to rig up, buy the most versatile machine you can afford. Look at what you can do, and what you'd like to do in five to ten years. A rig is...

Re: Question about Harbor Freight inverter

6013 and 6011 are both AC rods. (Both will run OK on a DC machine, electrode positive.) 6010 is a DC rod.

I'm not a fan of harbor freight products if you rely on your tools for your income. However, I have nothing against buying from them for hobby or practice needs.

Re: Aluminium oxidation layer

In your suggested repair, you will get more ultimate strength welding the sides INSTEAD of the areas you've indicated. Welding the sides gives you strength in tension. Welding across the web introduces two HAZs, and without welding the sides allows a lot of flex in the joint. Repairing the holes isn...

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!

Yeah yeah, I get that - but why's there never any chunks of coal in the slag? I'm assuming the slag was 'made' in the furnace, and not brought in on the truck that delivered the loads of coal. Is it because all the coal is burned off before the slag had a chance to accumulate? There's still coal in...

Nice work on the drawings! I have a similar freeware cad program, but I have yet to experiment with it.

Thanks for the language lesson, too. I believe I understood it completely. :D

I had it close in my head, but, in the English custom, I wasn't pronouncing the second "e".

Re: Welding, cutting torch, and meteorites!

Coal is sedimentary in nature. Layer upon layer of organic material accumulating in swamps and bogs, easily inundated by floods, tsunamis, etc. There are a lot of things in coal that are not carbon, especially low grades ( cheap) so the "clinkers" can have all sorts of mineral content in t...

Re: GAS FLOW RESTRICTOR IN CO2 LINE

I realize this is an old post, but it's a good question. Strip the flowmeter from a regulator/flowmeter (They're usually set to 60 or 75 psi, so you're dealing with inrush from this pressure) and place it in line between the solenoid and the stinger. Or, Install the flowmeter component on an adjusta...

Re: Does mixed gas ever separate?

(This reply is duplicated on the TIG forum.) You would think so, but no, not really. The molecular motion (heat) that keeps it a gas keeps it pretty well diffused. CO2 is heavier than Ar, of course, so there is a variation in the ratio between the top and bottom of the cylinder, but as soon as you b...

Re: Aluminium oxidation layer

I mentioned the flowmeter because another poster was having a similar (but worse) problem. Simply introducing the rod into the gas flow drew air into the puddle and immediately oxidized the puddle. He tried another flowmeter, and voila, problem solved. In calm air, it takes very little gas flow to p...

Re: TIG WELDING ALUMINUM PROBLEMS

So you're using a regulator set, instead of a regulator/flowmeter? It sounds like my guess about gas flow was pretty much on target. (And it was a guess!) What's your city/state? I have access to dozens of used flowmeter sets, and could send you one for the postage. You'll use a lot less gas when yo...

Re: Multipurpose Cut off saw (TCT Blade)

I've used saws like this, both wet and dry, and was impressed with both.

The blades are not inexpensive for either. Let the tool do the work. Don't get impatient and push the saw.

You'll be pleased with the quality of the cut.

Re: TIG WELDING ALUMINUM PROBLEMS

How much gas flow? With too much, it's possible pushing the rod into the flow is creating turbulence and mixing air in at the weld, even drawing it along the backside of the rod. In calm air, 10-15 cfh is plenty whether you're using a gas lens or collet body. The only time I've needed more than 30 c...

How portable? Miller makes a 120/240v. DC inverter. If I remember, it weighs under 20 lbs., and comes with a shoulder strap. It'll handle around 150A @ 20% duty (again, I'm going from memory, your mileage may vary). I used one @ 90A on 2" Sch 10 SS, several welds, and it never shut down from he...

Re: TIG WELDING ALUMINUM PROBLEMS

BUZZMAN4177, I hate to ask what's probably an obvious question, but you're using AC high-frequency (and you know it's working), 100% argon? Are you certain of the alloy of your base metal? With the cleaning you describe, the gas flow, and the fact your puddle forms normally, something doesn't add up...
