Re: Weld is too bright
I am using an auto darkening helmet. I have it cranked all the way up to 210 amps. I was trying to weld 1/8" aluminum. I haven't tried other materials. Thanks for your response. it sounds like your learning to tig weld and starting on aluminum, which is a little tough. have you mig welded or s...

Re: Weld is too bright
not sure what you mean by "just glows overly bright".
what helmet/hood do you have and what is it set to?
what amps are you running?
and what size material?
have you welded steel and/or stainless?

Re: Base angles
the bottom bit has to support sideways. but also vertical pull. especially with metal cladding the expansion/contraction will pull the bottom up/down. get a bit of dust, workshop grind under it and it will lift off the floor a bit. a capillary break is usually a strip of plastic or tar paper/felt be...

Re: Base angles
thats much easier to see. i would not weld it. a weld won't stop the angle from lifting off the concrete. welding on concrete is usually frowned on as the concrete can blow chunks out of it. i would just go hire a concrete nail gun or just glue it (as long as the concrete is clean). i notice no capi...

Re: Base angles
pics would help. i don't recommend welding against concrete. also i would not recommend welding to the kick out flashing. you will destroy any rust proofing. also not sure why you would want to as thats away from the inside panel. also that kickout is to push water out that drains down the back of t...

you need to go see a construction engineer or builder.
its not really a welding topic.
down here we have kitset sheds/leanto that you can put up yourself. not sure if you have similar.

Re: underwater welding
So what do they use to weld it, special electrodes, and presumably only stick welding? I can only ever see myself in the distant future weld stuff sitting under water but not require scuba gears, like in a shallow knee deep pond for example. I wouldn't use a normal welder for the job anyways, I'm s...

Re: Tacks
CJ, I'm trying to find a way to tack when I have to hold one piece without being able to feed wire. a crude way is to weld a dob of weld next to the edge of the joint while its apart. then hold that into position and light up on that bit of weld and drag the weld metal with the arc. at lot easier i...

Re: underwater welding
very specialized skill set.
i think jody has a podcast on it, interview with one of the guys who does it. the interesting comment was the diving is the hardest part. they would rather take a diver and teach them to weld than teach a welder how to dive.
one very dangerous job.

Re: Argon lighter or heavier then air?
The symptoms you describe don’t necessarily mean the window has lost its gas purge. For sake of discussion let’s call it argon, but other gases are also used. The condensation can simply be caused by poor insulation and the dew point is occurring on the inner layer, nearest the thermocline. Double ...

Re: Argon lighter or heavier then air?
I'm kind of at a loss what happened to the factory charge. Last year, the window over the kitchen sink IMPLODED. I replaced it scratching my head. Later I noticed while walking past another that the reflection was weird. I went out to my shop and grabbed a machinist straight edge and put it up to t...

Re: Argon lighter or heavier then air?
I have a couple of windows that have lost their charge. Trying to decide how to displace the air with the argon probably a bit pointless because the issue is the seal has failed. its going to continue to leak the argon out and pull moist air in. the other issue here is that the moisture inside the ...

Re: New guy saying hi.
A trick I used/use (even now occasionally) is to lay the first pass in, then let the weld cool, and run over it again a second time, no filler, with pulse only. It can help tidy up the weld and smooth out the inconsistencies. i've done that with repairs. added extra filler, ground it down to size, ...

Re: Welding galvanized metal
to add, grinding the galv off makes the welding easier. you still often end up with traces left over which makes tig a nitemare. so stick or mig is recommended.

thats a decent tig to start out with.
no need to be shy with the pics. i do plenty of sinful welding, as long as it gets the job done. sometimes its simply not avoidable.

Re: Converted flux core welder to stick welder, helmet question
thanks for the reply. I believe you are wrong. Do you actually know what Synergetic means? I have not been able to find an actual Manual for the 110e , although in the write up on Amazon and a few other sites state that the 110e is a 30-90A welder AND as you turn the knob to increase the Amps it au...

Re: Converted flux core welder to stick welder, helmet question
not a good unit to convert. a quick search shows they are a semi-synergic welder, ie it increases the volts as you increase the wire speed (but no means to adjust manually). the other issue is it changes wire speed, not amps. arc welders you need to change the amps. basically the electronics is all ...

Re: How do I track with stick welds?
Has anyone "dual shielded" TIG weld before? Meaning you use TIG torch on a stick electrode as filler rod? It seems like it would be a better choice for stainless weld because you wouldn't need such large cups, as the trailing beads would have been shielded by the flux (and therefore not o...

Re: How do I track with stick welds?
I can get 7018 from China. They may have different designation though. Like J421 is 6011 for example. j421 looks to be 6013 j506 looks to be 7016 i would have to find a chart for the specs. a lot of countries have their own specs so it can get confusing. i recommend getting both. 6013 still commonl...

Re: How do I track with stick welds?
If they run at different voltage then how come people use stick welder to TIG with scratch start all the time? depends on the welder. a lot of those old scratch start rigs are transformer machines. inverters are little different, hence why we have a switch to change from tig to stick. as you say sa...
