Grinding away that rust before you tacked it up would be a good idea as well.
Like other said using some aluminum backing/heat sync would be a good idea as well. Focus the arc on the 3/8 and wick the puddle up to the thinner material.
You got it!

I couldn't find any official documentation but be aware that you should be careful with NR211 if doing anything structural. As sbaker mentioned. NR211 is banned in coded work after the Northridge earthquake in CA. Here is at least some information for you. https://app.aws.org/forum/topic_show.pl?tid...

In a perfect world a 2"X4" would measure just that and 3/4" plywood would also measure 3/4". Ahh but, we do not live in 'Oz' where all is in color and wonderful. Heh you aren't wrong :D Although some folks around here do live in Oz. Totally understand you are learning as well, d...

Get a cheap pair of calipers. They're great for measuring thickness of stuff.

Good rule of thumb is 1 amp per thousands of an inch on carbon steel. https://www.benedict-miller.com/content.cfm/Resources/Decimal-Gauge-Conversion-Chart/category_id/103/page_id/141 14ga is about .083 so I'd set the machine for 85 to 90 amps. Stainless steel multiply by 2/3 (.66) for amp range whic...

Re: Welding Gas Tanks - Options for Buying Used
Word of caution from some people I respect that taught me. Be aware that if you buy a used tank that is stamped on the neck by a company, your LOCAL WS may not deem it a valid exchange tank even if you bought it on CL. The stamp means that the tank is owned by a company and it appears to the LWS as ...

+1 on SSC I love mine, Great pedal
The box style miller pedals are pretty rad too, but like others have said SSC is equal opportunity.

I mostly tig, but generally still suit up. I normally wear a Miller split hide welding jacket, which is very comfy for a full jacket. For general fab when jacket is off, I wear a tshirt and sometimes a dickes denim work shirt if its cold or grinding a lot. When I stick weld, denim shirt under the mi...

Really interesting. The discuss deposition rate, wire lost due to fume, cost per llbs etc etc.

I think thats pretty standard. They basically quoting you time and labor.
Email your local CC welding instructor and ask if they have a local CWI instructor who does onsite certification. Where I am we have a guy and its around $100 + $50 for retest.

Alternative uses of 7016 (Pipeliner 16P)
My local trade school periodically gets rods donated and sometimes they were left out of the oven and cannot be rebaked for whatever reason.. so they toss them. They recently tossed 50 llbs of 7016. Looking at the data sheet these electrodes are meant for root pass welding up to X100 high strength p...

- 3/32" lanthanated tungsten, - 1/16" ER70S-2 filler rod. This will service you just fine and is how I learned/was taught on 16ga. - 60 amps start then foot pedal. Argon at +/- 15. Set your machine to 45-60 amps. You will likely not need more than 45. Argon 15cfg is good to go, try bumping...

Re: First tig machine for pipe welding
I have a maxstar 150stl. On 120 and 240 you can utilize full TIG capabilities. I'd guess 240 is "better" and I normally run it on 240 now that I have the service, but I ran it on 120 for a few years and never noticed the difference (mostly sheet metal at that time). The 150 is older than t...

I've got a Miller DE Clearlight. Its not bad. Gotta try out my buddies 4c to see what the rave is all about.
My advice: Buy a hood from a reputable brand. Optrel, Miller, Lincoln, Esab, etc. Safety should be a high priority for all of us and the old saying goes: we only get one set of eyes.

I used the jacksons, millers, 3ms from home depot and some shit arc-one glasses. My favorite are the jacksons. The lenses seem to stay "clear" and "fresh" the longest. The 3ms as well as the Jacksons do not squish the dome so to speak. The Millers are nice too, but haven't worn t...

Re: Miller multimatic 220 feedback
I would be happy to own one. I'm sure people would generally recommend buy two dedicated machines, one tig, one mig, but I can''t afford that. That being said if you look closely that could be an option for a similar price. Maybe an htp 220V and a powermig210? I was meaning that there is nothing I'v...

Re: Miller multimatic 220 feedback
If the 220 is the ac/dc tig multiprocess, I've used it a bit at the local CC. I found it to be a pretty nice inverter machine. A little bit hard arc start at super low amperage, but other than that the arc is clean. Welds aluminum fine. Pulse settings are also pretty standard. I haven't used or insp...
