inconsistent welding amperage

In the end those old machines will far outlast anything made today with their auto setttings and LED displays . They all are nice and look cool but are definite points of failure. FWIW nearly every time I have problems that come and go striking arc on rods that had worked a second ago it usually is ...

Re: Very green welder here. Question about storing my machine

I’ve got the same machine since 1998. It’s spent it’s life in a cold garage in N NY cold wet and nasty climate. Mine came on a small wooden shipping platform so I left it on that. Eventually I made a small wooden cart to keep it on sitting on 4 tiny HF steel wheels so I can roll it around. They do g...

Re: inconsistent welding amperage

I’m curious about the comment about avoiding plastic and metal boxes. That’s what most of mine have come in and I always kept them right in their plastic tight closing boxes. All I do is keep them in the closet with the water heater and most of it is very forgiving 6011 / 6013 which are pretty forgi...

At least it’s a sign that you actually use it. I’ve seen more than a few shops that are not much more than a showcase for a idiot . As for the holes……you should see mine

Re: Welding in the Soviet Union. Anyone know about this?

No we never used titanium . I used to clear thr truck drivers at the Canadian border heading to Connecticut with their loads of Argon. The drivers said they just dropped them at buildings where someone plugged them into fittings. I didn’t get a lot of details what they did with the stuff from there ...

Re: Welding in the Soviet Union. Anyone know about this?

Well I don’t know much of anything about Commie subs but I’ll say one thing. They build ours like that. They leave the whole tanker there and someone plugs it into the building and the welders just work in the environment wearing breathing gear. They swap out trailers as needed. Sent from my iPad us...

A simple circular saw with a metal disk. Just don’t use a cheapo with a plastic guard or it will melt.

Re: Old Girl Handled Business!!

Have you considered changing that vise bolt to a stud? You might be able to braze a piece of threaded rod into the partial socket, then braze the broken chunk on the exposed edge of the stud and to the fracture surface? I think all-thread is available in both Gr2 and Gr5, so choose wisely. Cheers, ...

That’s exactly why I don’t use safety glasses for that sort of thing. I usually use a shield and keep my chin down so it protects my neck.

Re: Cracked Cast Iron Exhaust Manifold

You probably don't need a fancy oven. Preheat to about 500* (household oven will do if the wife doesn't kill you). Thermal blankets for the controlled cooling. You can grab those from online sources maybe even a decent local welding shop. Got pictures of the manifold showing the damage? I welded my...

Re: I think I killed my Lincoln 210 MP

So, I went to Lincoln and searched for parts. That board, if I'm not mistaken, costs about $700. Which is 70% of what I paid for the machine. This would mean that I'd have to hope for a component level repair that would almost certainly be a very small fraction of that amount. However, during my go...

Air compressor kicking on ect...... I don't think that's it. I've tried different things and gotten the same results a...

Be sure to get one with a downward facing exhaust so you don’t fog up. Amazon had them a while ago cheap.

I normally just blow all the sawdust and grinding out the door with my leaf blower. Once its outside I blow it off into the grass, good nuff. It just melts away.

Here’s a good question: How Many Of You Guys Still Use A W

I only use mine once in a great while when something gets stuck on there but otherwise never, why bother, never lost one yet. My only gripe was it took so many years for me to figure out that Twist on Twist Off with a beloved hand is plenty[emoji85]. I can’t help noticing that the new uber high end ...

Thanks for all the thoughts. I ordered the linked grinder from bakers. My Airgas wants 300 for the same model #. NOT intended to start an airgas bashing thread, I like them actually. Been really good to me. In that case you’re a lucky man. Better check your wallet one more time to be sure! Sent fro...

Re: Which welder, 120v MIG?

Ive had a Hobart Handler 135 15 years with no issues. It’s only vise is being heavy if you need to lug it around. I use it up to 1/8” then normally grab the Tombstone. It’ll weld 1/4 but I prefer the stick for the heavier stuff. If I was only going to buy 1 though I think I’d get one of those dual v...
