Re: Reusing stainless steel coupons
They're just in too big of a piece for coupons and I need to cut it down, but I don't have a plasma, and I hate using angle grinder to cut it. Is there a better way other than plasma or a shear? These are just 1mm and 1.5mm thick, too thick for tin snips to work.

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
Yea, I was REALLY tempted to do this without filler. I mean I feel like unless I'm welding anything more than 3mm thick, adding filler only makes the weld piss poor, as a few examples have shown... I just did some practice and in theory I could get good welds without filler just by turning the amp W...

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
It’s STILL a matter of gas coverage and cup size. You seem unwilling to use the recommended sizes and flow, so oxidation/overheating will occur no matter how fast you travel, what size filler, and how amps you use. Until you change those variables, nothing will improve. So what size cup should I us...

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
Question, I tried what the video suggested, closer arc length, higher amperage and faster travel speed, but I've never found a combination that works. If I set the amps too low it takes me a long time to get a puddle and the metal cooks, but even at higher amperage it takes less time to form a puddl...

Re: Reusing stainless steel coupons
Never mind, I found a shop that makes stuff out of stainless steel, he gave me a bunch of 1mm and 1.5mm thick stainless steel sheets I can make coupons out of... Only charged me 6 bucks for it.

Reusing stainless steel coupons
If I grind all the oxidation off the coupons, can I still use them to practice welding a beautiful finish, or are they forever cooked? Prefer not keep buying coupons, they're expensive.
At least for aluminum I know a guy who machines them and I can just keep exchanging scraps with him.

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
I mean those brush with the solution that you apply a current to. I have no idea what it's called but it cleans up oxidation. It's not expensive at all and people have rigged a Tig torch to do it. I got no idea what's in the solution but they sell a powder that you mix with water to make the solutio...

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
So is bigger cup and lots of gas flow really the only way to weld stainless? I keep seeing videos from Pacific arc tig weld channel and everything they do is shiny, yellow at best but the best I can do is dark blue with some yellow right under the cup, and this is ideal condition too. And he's usin...

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
PXL_20231225_102944638.MP.jpg This is the best I can do so far. I got very limited number of coupons so I'm making the best out of ones I got. PXL_20231225_112448335.jpg This is my torch setup. Chinese but it's all I got. Best gas flow I got is about 5 liters per minute, any more than this I'm wast...

Re: Why are oxyacetylene cutting preferred over plasma?
I really like plasma though and the welders I have budget for isn't going to be the best machines out there. The plasma makes it easier for me to break up larger pieces of stainless steel into coupons for me to practice welding on... Angle grinder is loud and slow, and oxyacetylene torches cannot cu...

Re: Why are oxyacetylene cutting preferred over plasma?
Multi process welder that include plasma is incredibly common these days... often don't have to buy them extra unless they are doing CNC. Besides it saves on gas because gas cutting uses a LOT of oxygen.

Re: trouble with oxidization welding stainless
I tried going to scrap yards to find stuff to make coupons out of but a few scrap yard I saw do not sell, only buy. Maybe it's liability because they don't want you digging through their scrap pile while people are operating heavy equipment.

trouble with oxidization welding stainless
PXL_20231216_012647615.jpg I've been trying to weld stainless, and trying to get it so I don't end up with oxidization, but it's impossible. I'm not using Furrick anything, can't afford anything that fancy, so I'm using standard gas lens and ceramic gas lens cups, #6 because I don't have a big gas ...

Re: Why are oxyacetylene cutting preferred over plasma?
Well, how often do you rip through 2 inch thick steel plate? Only place in Taiwan I have ever seen cut anything that thick outside of a scrap yard or construction is at a steel supplier, and they don't use a torch to rip through that, they use a bandsaw. If you're cutting through 1/4 inch stock most...

Re: Why are oxyacetylene cutting preferred over plasma?
I guess what I've realized is that it's very rare for me, or actually most people in the shops I've seen in Taiwan to cut any metal that's more than 1/2" in thickness. A 40 amp plasma cutter will cut 1/2", not particularly well, but it will do it. What I love about it is not having to worr...

Re: Glass cups
I'm going to try and see what I can do with the glass cup from China, but from another youtube video, the gas lens assembly itself is the exact same diameter/thread as the Furrick ones. He was talking about how he can just use Chinese cups and Furrick gas lens. I'm already using Chinese branded weld...

Why are oxyacetylene cutting preferred over plasma?
I've seen a lot of oa cutting setup in Taiwan, even in factory settings where they have several tanks of oxygen tanks and acetylene tanks. But I've never seen a single plasma cutter in Taiwan except at stores selling welders. I had a 3 in 1 that has plasma and I love it. It cuts through all conducti...

Re: 3in1 Welder Issues
Also, did you actually use the plasma function? Did it work or did you assume it won't work? Their line of product all integrate the weld cable and the gas hose into a single cable. Obviously you're going to have to switch the machine to plasma mode. If pressing the switch does nothing, perhaps the ...

Re: 3in1 Welder Issues
Hi All, Nice to have a forum where you can gather info. I bought a ProWeld CT520, 3 in 1 welder, Tig, Arc and plasma. My issue is with the plasma, wont work, but more importantly, I cant see that it would work. There is only 2 wires going to the hand piece, this is traced back to the flow control s...

Re: Glass cups
I'm paying not only 20 times more for furrick cups, it also costs a ton of money to ship to Taiwan because they charge ridiculous rate for shipping. But I'm just using the Chinese stubby collets, they work well, as well as their standard, non stubby collets. I'm even seeing collets with beveled mout...

Re: Big gush of argon?
HI folks. I have the welder listed below. It came with a flowmeter. I was wondering if the pressure is too high though. When I start a weld there's a big gush. I don't know if it's adjustable. I could put a regulator ahead of the flowmeter I guess. I don't know if this affects my Al but my steel lo...

I've seen those Chinese green o ring gas lenses and glass cup, what's your experience with them? Is the furrick cup much better? It's like 20 times the price.
The Chinese standard cup works well so far.

Re: Ended up with bad gas
Oh I forgot to add, I've tried various settings on flow rate and for a number 6 cup, 3 or 4 liters per minute seems to give the best result. Higher flow doesn't improve anything, if anything it makes it a little worse and wastes gas.

Ended up with bad gas
I got a new welding rig, Andeli WSE 250 acdc with cold weld (really just Tig spot). I bought a 40cf (10 liters in Taiwan) bottle because I can't carry a 100 pound bottle up the stairs. I was getting terrible welds, and the tungsten keeps getting coated in black crud almost within seconds of use. Whe...
