Re: Workshop storage rack

Alright CJ, I made it to the metal supplier this afternoon to retrieve the new material: storage rack 38.jpg That is one 12' stick of 2" x 2" x 1/8" tubing and 3 10' sticks of 1.5" x 1.5" x 3/16" angle. Unfortunately the wife-eee needed to make a grocery run tonight aft...

Re: Workshop storage rack

I have and sometimes need to use a 50' extension cord as well. It's one of those beefy RV power cables. Damn thing weighs about 60# but works a treat. Ah yes, I'm familiar. I'll bet it does indeed work for ya. The 6 gauge cable isn't heavy-heavy, but it lets you know it's there. I like running the ...

Re: Welding cart

Whoops! Yes it’s run of the mill carbon steel that’s been zinc plated. I’m using my Millermatic 130 to stick it all together. Got some very helpful pointers from the good people here. Took my beads from shameful to not embarrassing. :) Ah ok, well I hope you're grinding off the zinc prior to weldin...

And what is the material? Good ol' carbon steel? It looks too clean and shiny for that. What process are you using? I seem to recall mention in your thread of MIG, but it wasn't clear (to me).

Keep up the work!

Re: Workshop storage rack

Ahhh yes, that makes complete sense to me now. For some reason I imagined it loaded up with various and sundry sheet metal, etc perched over the car. Then trying to move it and a wheel catches a pebble and the weight of everything torques the leg and suddenly a bad time is had by all :o Ah yes, tha...

Re: Workshop storage rack

All's well that ends well. The gusset welds came together despite some less-than-ideal fitup in one or two cases and I handled the rod even better tonight than last night. Heck, I even used some 7018 to complete a few additional tacks in order to consume the entire rod! I ground all welds down, 'cep...

Re: Workshop storage rack

Well tonight after work was filled with more of the little stuff: welding the outer gusset seams, the feet, the diamond plate panels, grinding, primer, etc. I opted to just tack the diamond plate into position in several places rather than stitch weld them. They don't need much really; just enough t...

Re: Workshop storage rack

@av8or1 looking good! Are you at all concerned with the legs splaying when it’s loaded up and needs to be moved? Thank you! Confused though. Am I concerned about an issue with the legs when? As it sits currently, I will not store anything on it in that configuration. I am using this storage rack in...

Re: Workshop storage rack

Parallel to the long sides. Welded at every intersection. This turns all "rails" into a more monolithic structure. Plus, angle is very strong in it's vertical axis. 1.5x1.5x.187 (3/16) would be quite stout. I like X bracing on the legs, personally. Again, angle iron works really well. You...

Re: Workshop storage rack

You might run 2 pieces of angle iron side-to-side underneath. Stitch them to the crossed rails. You'd be surprised at how much strength that will add in the center preventing the "sag". Thank you for that CJ ... to be clear, are you suggesting that the angle should be applied parallel (an...

Re: Workshop storage rack

The largest time sink of the day however would involve the casters. I needed to weld the all-thread to the caster plates. The idea was to insert the end of one of the all-thread rods into the opening in the middle of the plate. There was approximately at 1/16" gap there, so I wouldn't be able t...

Well I made good progress tonight y'all. Even did alright with the rod to boot, which was a welcome change. Funny though how the little tasks require the most time, isn't it? Re: Workshop storage rack

What you can do to make your life a bit easier is to fashion "pigtail" adapters from all of your different machines to use that wall mounted outlet. From the looks of it, the wall is an L14-30. Grab a couple of male L14-30s, wire them to different "R" type mating plugs, make the...
