Re: Messy arc sputter while welding aluminum
I don’t know “green machines” but I do know polarity. Yes, for steel, torch needs to be in a “NEG” plug so that you run DCEN. But he’s welding ally, so that’s AC, switching between polarities. On my Miller Dynasty, it’s one plug, a button to swap polarity. even on AC its needs to be correctly conne...

Re: Messy arc sputter while welding aluminum
Can I say again, please clarify the polarity you are using.
If you are using electrode positive your balance will be inverted. So 30% cleaning will become 70% cleaning.

an encoder would be extremely expensive. maybe someone has done it, but considering most pedals are use dirt cheap pots i kinda doubt it. in this case its a throttle pedal off a forklift or truck. no one uses encoders on those (that i have seen). they are typically pots. a hall effect is kinda fanc...

Re: foot pedal problems
they are not "digital" as such. there is no data. odds are its sending back voltage. pots often work the same way, as variable voltage divider, it sends back a voltage. the machine won't care if its a pots sending back voltage or hall effect sensor. as long as its the right voltage range....

Re: foot pedal problems
i will have to see what voltage range it puts out. typically the pots versions do the same thing, use the pot as a voltage divider and output a certain voltage range. hopefully just a simple measure of what voltage the machine puts out to the pedal and what voltage range comes back from the pedal. ...

Re: Stainless steel welds sinking
If you could clarify one thing. When you say "wetted in at both toes" what exactly do you mean? Wetting refers to the way the filler flows and blends in with the base metal. It is the same concept as wetting with water. A drop of water will bead in a polished surface - it does not wet the...

Hello, If a 6011 has less tensile strength than a 7018, but more penetration, does it make the strength of welds of both equal ? Sylvain Firstly, what tweake said. In addition, what do you mean by penetration? The word does not have an official definition in welding. If you mean "depth of fusi...

Re: Engine Manifold and local grounding
Jack - here’s a scenario you need to think through that might help dissuade your caution. Think about a rotary positioner. You clamp to the ground bung, secure the work in the chuck, then weld your butt off full speed, for multiple passes. That machine has an electric motor and bearing and bushings...

Thanks, but your posts did nothing to inform me of things I don’t already know, and, don’t dispel my point. To each their own I guess. Yes, of course, but I don't think we are on the same track (or page as you might say). I am not suggesting that the transmission of heat might damage bearings, it i...

Welding a head bolt or other stud is different. There are bearings within the block, but not in the welding current path

Assuming a valve pushrod for the moment. Here is a rough diagram showing four places (red circles) where welding current should not flow, but is in the current path. Re: Engine Manifold and local grounding
If welding a pushrod in an engine, the welding current path is: Block -> journals -> cam shaft -> follower -> pushrod. We disagree. The head is bolted to the block. The pushrod extends from rocker arm (which is moved by the pushrod) to the cam lifter. The lifter sits atop a lobe. Journals typically...

Re: Engine Manifold and local grounding
CJ must be much luckier than I am. If I attempted to weld a pushrod (of any sort) with the return clamp connected to the block, every connecting piece in the current loop, including followers and bearings, would be welded together. You might clean the intended weld area, but all the other "joi...

Re: Engine Manifold and local grounding
The pushrod has a path to ground anywhere. It touches a rocker shaft, a cam lobe, and in turn the engine block. The block is mounted to the frame via the mounts, and likely a battery ground to the starter. So don’t worry about “locally” grounding the pushrod. To weld to it, you need to chemically c...

Re: Anyone here use Spray MIG or Pulsed MIG welding for mild steel???
Biggest issue with spray mode is position dependence. I can’t envision welding a roll cage with spray transfer for steel. thats why you use pulse. pulse spray can be used in all positions. Well his question was about pulse or spray, not pulsed spray. And again, I’ve never seen anyone weld a roll ca...

Re: Polarity on Stick
7018 usually runs on DCEP but if used for a root pass, DCEN is suggested because penetration is less and there is less chance of blowing through. The polarity is given as AC, DC+ or DC-. However, the note says that DC- is recommended for root passes. As I said, for 7018, using DC- instead of DC+ gi...

Tables of generalised electrode properties are a good indicator but the manufacturer's data is more accurate for a specific product.
On this 7018 data sheet,
The polarity is given as AC, DC+ or DC-. However, the note says that DC- is recommended for root passes.

Re: Polarity on Stick
I have never used my welder for stick and I want to get one pound samples of E7018 and E6011 to try out. I saw on a chart that these are for DC+. What happens if you run these on DC- ? You need to check the specs for the rods you buy. 6011 usually runs on AC or either polarity 7018 usually runs on ...

Re: Make custom Tig Cap
I can see a really long back cap getting in the way - or poking your eye out. 1. Take a full length cap, cut it in half. 2. Cut one inch (or whatever is needed) from the middle of another. 3. Insert the one inch bit between the halves of the one cut in half. 4. Put heat shrink tube over the lot. Thi...
