Re: fifty/fifty mix

If I go with a 50/50 mix for aluminum as suggested here on this site will this mix work just as well for all other applications such as steel and other metals It might work ok...might even work better on some thicker steels. but it is unecessary and might be too hot for thin steel and stainless. i ...

Nope, dont try hastelloy W...it only works on steel and nickel alloys...a good aluminum rod for castings is 4047

Re: ah yes tig aluminum..everyone has issues heh

A friend of mine from Miller calls this "pepper in the puddle" . I notice you dont really have any cleaning action going on outside the weld bead....no frosty band of cathodic etching. That could either be that your ac balance is set too high to give too much dcen, or an argon issue becaus...

Re: Looking for help in identifying electrode material

sounds a lot like Cronatron 338 to me. it used to be marketed as a maintenance rod and ran kind of like a 6013.
A lot of old timers raved about it but it was a lot more expensive than generic 6013's

Re: Tig gas sheilding vs oxyacetylene

Rick, First of all , thanks for your participaton and no BS style here on the forum. You add a lot of value here. I believe what happens in oxyfuel welding is that the oxygen gets completely burned up in the flame...so areas under the flame envelope are shielded. trying to gas weld with an oxidizing...

Re: WALKING THE CUP

mike, here is my two cents... for the root, i dont like a lot of angle so stickout is just enough to lean back about 5 or 10 degrees second pass can use a lot more angle because you don't want to penetrate and suck back all the passes all the way out to flush, the stickout will be something in betwe...

Re: Beyond Basics Videos?

jason, I will be working on lots of videos soon but it takes a lot of time to make them. a few things to try that will help you to narrow your beads and still get penetration... increase the ac balance to put more dcen in the mix increase the ac frequency use 80/20 helium argon lastly...and this bil...

Re: Miller Maxstar 91CC

the snap start is the high frequency start unit. without it, you can only stick and scratch start tig.

with that amperage , i would get a #9 size air cooled torch from tectorch or weldcraft.

thanks,

Re: How is this weld done?

I would say...definitely a tig weld. its prettycool looking but not necessarily bettter than a straight run. You see weave beads like this all the time on steel and stainless steel pipe. You see it less on aluminum but it still works ok and looks cool. here is a pic of a magnesium gearbox housing wi...

this joint is in the range that either 3/32 or 1/8" tungsten would get the job done. walking the cup will be hard on schedule 40, there is not much bevel to slide the cup on for the root. i would freehand use as little weave as possible on the root. i would not use a land. or if you do, just ba...

Re: Maxstar 200dx vs Dynasty 200sd

if you were buying new, i would advise you to get a 200dx because you get pulse for just few extra bucks. A lot of folks never use pulse. if you found a good enough deal on the sd, being able to weld aluminum is a pretty huge leap. i use pulse quiet often, and it helps sometimes... but can honestly ...

the hot pass got the name from 6010 pipe joints where the second pass had to be "hot" enough to burn out any leftover slag from the root. its kind of a misnomer....for example on tig pipe joints, people still call the second pass the hot pass even though its sometimes run colder than the r...
